GOOD MANAGEMENT IS TOPIC AT XI TAU MEETING Xi Tau "Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi heW a regular meeting Tues day evening at the attractive home of Mrs. Robert Kent on Flint Street with the following members in attendance: Mrs. Harold Jokela, Mrs. Bert Griffin, Mrs. William Semmler, Mrs. George Crocker, Mrs. Robert C. White, Mrs. Gor don Stanley, Mrs. Henry Darby, Mrs. J. R. Wharton, Mrs. P a u It Hult and Mrs. Morris Bowker. New officers for the ensuing year were announced as follows: president, Mrs. Henry Darby, vice president, Mrs. Bert Griffin; re cording secretary, Mrs. Paul Yundt; corresponding secretary, Mrs... George Quine; treasurer, Mrs, James R. Finlay; extension officer, Mrs. Harold Jokela; city council representative, Mrs. Wil liam Semmler, and alternate, Mrs. Robert C. White. At the conclusion of the business meeting an interesting and thought provoking program on "Good Man agement" was presented by Mrs. Bert Griffin. "The end result of good management," she stated, "is good living." She likened good management of one's self to the care used, by the farmer who prac tices soil conservation when he tries to achieve a good balance be tween what he puts into the soil to conserve it, and what he ex pects it to produce. "Our minds, too." said Mrs. Griffin, "become increasingly arid and barren if we let tiiem lie fal low and uncultivated. We cannot change the quantity of our intelli gence, but we can do much to en rich its quality and so increase our awareness of the infinite po-' lenua'itues oa our souis. Following the program, refresh ments were served bv the hostess. and the evening was spent in dis- cusron ot tne program topic. . BACONS ENTERTAIN FRIENDSHIP CLUB AT CARD PARTY Mr. and Mrs. John Bacon en tertained members of the Friend ship Club and several auests, Fri day evening at their home on the West Calapooia. Beautiful spring tiowers were usea about the rooms. Five hundred was in play dur ing the evening hours with men's high going to William Caster, and ladies high to Laura Chenoweth: low scores went to Alfred Hand and Mrs. Arm Hutohenson; travel ing prizes went to Edward Lamor eaux and Mrs. Pearl Hand. After the card play, Mr. Bacon was presented a gift and cards to hon or him on his birthday. At midnight a delicious potluck supper was served to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lamoreaux, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Haines, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Chenoweth. DILLARD MISS IS HONORED ON BIRTHDAY Carta Ann Smith was pleasantly surprised on her seventh birthday Friday at the home of her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Garland Smith. Games were played and prizes awarded. Horns and favors were presented to each of the guests. After the honored guest had opened her gifts, delicious refresh ments of decorated birthday cake and ice cream were" served to Don na and Ronnie Bates, Marshall Rutschman, Becky and Kitty Daw son, Linda and Cynthia Hayhurst. PINK AND BLUE SHOWER PARTY IS HELD AT OAKLAND Mrs. George Sifers was honored recently at a pink and blue show er at the home of Mrs. Obie Hut son. Mrs. Amelia Welliver was co hostess. Several games were play ed with Ms. J. C. Slf, Mrs. Le roy Sifers and Miss Ilene Beaver winning prizes. Following the opening of the lovely gifts, refreshments were served. AAUW SOCIAL STUDY GROUP TO ENTERTAIN AT DINNER WEDNESDAY The AAUW Social Study group has invited all AAUW members and their guests to attend a 6:30 p.m. no-hostess dipner at Carl's Haven Wednesday evening, May 25. Carter, OR 2-1347. MRS. MOEN HONORED AT BIRTHDAY SUPPER Mrs. Hnry Moen was guest of honor at a birthday buffet-supper at the home of her mother, Mrs. Cap Parker in Canyonville, Wed nesday evening. Guests included, besides the Parker and Moen families, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ki Mell, Mr. and Mrs. Einar Engen, the Rev. A. M. Shaffer, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shaffer and family, and Mist Ruth Kessi. WOMAN'S SOCIETY HAS MOTHERS DAY AND MEMORIAL OBSERVANCE In observance of Mother's Day, a very realistic framed living pic ture of "Whistler's Mother," posed from the famous painting by Whis tler, was portrayed by Mrs. Don Naden at the Presbyterian Wom an's Society Thursday afternoon. The effect was almost perfection the the most minute detail. As Mrs. Naden posed, a beautiful mu sical setting was provided by Mar tha Mulkey with her violin and Virginia Young at the piano play ed "The Lamplit Hour" and 'Smilin' Thru." The setting fot the picture and the program were arranged by Mrs. N. D. Johnson and Mrs. Arthur McMullcn. Gorgeous bouquets of mixed spring flowers were placed about the social room and the tables so attractively appointed for the dessert-luncheon preceding the meet ing were centered with arrange ments of the same flowers. Host esses for the afternoon were Mrs. Charles E. Morgan, Mrs. William R. Coon, Mrs. J. Gillis Carlson, Mrs. Fred Hamilton, Mrs. E. C. Patterson, Mrs. McKean and Mrs. Charles Insley. Mrs. Ivan Pickens conducted the meeting. Invocation was given by Mrs. Harry Hampton followed by group singing. Mrs. W. M. Camp bell presented the second of a se ries of devotions using as her theme the fifth chapter of the Epis tle to the Hebrews. Mrs. Campbell also spoke a lovely memorial serv ice in which she was assisted by Mrs. Gordon Harness, who sang the beautiful hymn of comfort, "Close to the Heart of God." The business meeting included an interesting report from the ex ecutive board and various officers and committee reports. Several communications were read includ ing an invitation from the Geneva Guild to attend their next regular meeting June 7 in the social room of the church. It was decided to hold a rummage sale in the church basement May 20-21. Appropriate offertory music played by Mrs. Frances Lintott was the lately "Songs My Mother Taught Me." The next regular meeting will be June 9, further details of which, will be anounced later. SUTHERLIN CLASS HONORS MEMBERS AT SHOWER PARTY A double shower was given Mon dav evening at the Sutherlin Chris tian Church by the JOY Class with Ann Dunn and Maecel Scovell in charge of general arrangements, Bettie Abeene in charge ot gifts, and Ruth Urben, the games. Mrs. Walter Jenkins was honor ed at a pink and blue shower, and Nancy Walter and Gene Ben- brook, at a bridal shower. The lat ter couple were married following church service Sunday, May 15, by the Rev. Gerald Bentley. After each couple had opened their many lovely girts, refreshments were served bv the committee. POTLUCK DINNER HELD WEDNESDAY EVENING Douglas Barracks No. 176, Vet erans of World War I met with their ladies at a potluck dinner at the IOOF Hall dining room Wed nesday evening. Buddy James Waldt, past com mander of Eugene Barracks No. 33, was guest of honor and gave a very interesting talk on tne Bar racks and the national organiza tion as well as explaining about the Oregon state convention to be held at Tatt in July. Ten dole gates were elected from Roseburg. An auxiliary was organized and the following temporary officers were elected: Mrs. Dons Hart, president; Mrs. Beatrice Schaeffer, first vice president; Mrs. Ethel Krewson, second vice president; Mrs. Anna Lynes, chaplain; Susan Bowman, secretary, and Margaret Ingling, treasurer. There were several attractive "crazy" hats worn by the ladies and the Roseburg Jewe'ers prize for the craziest hat went to Mrs. Jennie Midland. MELROSE CLUB IS ENTERTAINED AT The Melrose Friendly Hour Club was graciously entertained recently at the lovely new home of Mrs. H. W. Conn in Riversdale. A delicious potluck luncheon was served at noon to Ethclmae Schnei der, a guest; and Elsie Coffell, Norma Fenn, Minnie Jacobson, Hazel Bly, Vera Thompson, Grace Fenn and the hostess. A business session was held and readings were given on spring dur ing the roll call. The program. conducted by Mrs. Bly, consisted of games and a reading by .Mrs. Thompson. Flower making was the afternoon's project. Next meet ing will be May 25 at the home of Mrs. Wanda Turpin at a noon potluck luncheon and flower mak ing session. HAPPY HOUR CLUB MEETS WEDNESDAY Mrs. Ernest Trussell entertained the Riversdale Happy Hour Club at her home recently. The mem bers answered roll call with book title pantomimes. The affair was a combined open house and a shower for Mr. and Mrs. Walter Donivan Wright, who recently lost their home by fire. Mrs. Howard Whitten and Mrs. Robert Stritzke were co hostesses. Mrs. Carter, Mrs. H. A. Watzig and Mrs. W. H. Carter as sisted about the room. A large arangement of tulips, Scotch broom and daisies centered the serving table in the family room. Troy Fenneil was Best man for the bridegroom A reception was held in the church social parlor following the ceremony. Following a short honeymoon trip to Portland, the couple are at home in Roseburg.
