simplified specif lea lions for civil
ian identifieaton tags, accordng
to local CD officials..
The announcement follows an
earlier appeal for states and local
governments to support an immed
iate nationwide Civil Defense tag
ging program to help strengthen
defenses against possible atomic
or H-bomb attack with the accom
panying threat of radioactive fall
out. Under the law, tagging is the
responsibility of states and locali
ties, which finance their own pro
grams, according to Brig. Gen. J.
T. Pierce, county director, and Col.
Bob Dicey, Roscburg director.

Exhibits made by the top "school
age scientists" in Oregon and
Washington will be displayed at
Oregon Slate collese May 1 to 6
at the third annual Northwest Sci
ence Exposition.
The exposition will bring togeth
er the best 500 entries from various
school, county and district shows
held during the past month.
From these, judges will pick
winners in four major age divis
ions from grades t to 12
and three science categories
physical, physiographioal and bio-
logical sciences. Judging is based
on originality, scientific thoiufht,

ty and dramatic value,
The annual show is conducted
by the Oregon Museum of Science
and Industry. Stanley II. Shirk,
Portland, is director. Since its es
tablishment two years ago, the ex
position has won wide attention for
number and quality of entries.

lips spent Friday and Saturday
in Salem, where they-entered a
competitive examination together
with 105 other students from Ore
gon high schools for the Mary L.
Collins scholarship in fields of lib
eral arts and music. The students
were contending for 10 scholar
ships: five for boys and five for
girls. Personal interviews and au
ditions in music were given. They
also heard an address by G. Her
bert Smith and Senator Mark Hat
field. The students made a tour of
the campus and were guests at the
Lausanne Hail Friday night. High
school records and interviews will
count toward the selections.

Mr. and Mrs. Avery LassweU
spent several days last week in
Portland.
James A. Chamberlain, husband
of Mrs. Evelyn Chamberlain,
English teacher in Yoncalla High
Scliool died Friday. Mrs. Bob
Campbell is substituting for Mrs.
Chamberlain during her absence.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Mctj have
sold five acres of land south of
town to Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Carl
son and R. A. Duncan, who will
build a motel at the cloverleaf of
Highway 99.

is sheet metal. Mr. and Mrs. Bow
man will use the building for their
garage; moving their business
equipment across the street from
where they are now located..
A double garage has been built
in the rear of the Linda Bigclow
properly, now occupied by Mr, and
Mrs. Ailie Templeton.

said the Reds already had com
pleted preparations for an attack
on the offshore islands of Quemoy
ano .Matsu across the Formosa

Nationalist president, was inflexi
bly determined to defend those
islands with or without outside
help.

An unverified Nationalist press
report said one-eyed Communist
Gen. Liu Lo-Qheng, commander of
the Second Field Army, had
arrived April 12 at Foochow,
capital of Fukicn Province, about
40 miles west of the Matsu islands.
It connected his alleged arrival
with Red plans for an attack or
Matsu and Quemoy.
Nationalist intelligence reports
said a number of Soviet-built TL28
jet bombers had arrived in Central
China and speculated that they
