New Drug Said Addicition Cause SAN FRANCISCO Wl A new kind of drug addiction was de scribed Tuesday by a government medical researcner. The drug is meperidine (trade name Demerol) and is used like morphine to relieve pain. Medical personnel have had a widespread but erroneous belief that meperidine is less habit-forming than other anti-pain drugs, said Dr. Harris Isbell, of the Addiction Research Center operated by the National Institute of Mental HeaMi at Lexington, Ky. His report was read to the Federation of Ameri can Societies for Experimental Bi ology. Although meperidine is only one tenth as effective against pain as morphine, it has many other morphine-like characteristics, Dr. Is bell reported. Withdrawal of the new drug from a habitual user causes more restlessness and mus cle-twitching than morphine with drawal, the researcher said. Doctors should take the same precautions against meperidine ad diction as they do against mor phine, Dr. Isbell added. BANKRUPTCY FILED Robert Ray Jenkins, Evergreen Trailer Court.
