Visits Daughter Mrs. Everett Crabtree is leaving Roseburg Thursday for her home in Yuma, Ariz., after spending six weeks visiting at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Garey. Tripodl of Tacoma, Wash., stopped over in Roseburg. for a week's visit with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Tripodi, and family, en route home from a vacation spent at Palm Springs, Calif. Back From Eugene Mr. and Mrs. Roy Biadley and daughter, Gaylyn, of Roseburg enjoyed the luncheon and banquet of the So ciety of American oresters held in Eugene Saturday. Bradley is assistant forester of Uie Bureau of Land Management here. His wife, Ruth, has a catering service. Daughter Is Born A daugh ter, Vicki Anne, weighing seven pounds seven ounces was born April 3 at Good Samaritan Hos pital in Corvallis to Mr. and Mrs. Dick Hempenius. Riverbend Club To Meet The Riverbend Garden Club will hold an important meeting tonight at 8 o'clock at the home of Mrs. El mer Meeks, 1414 Bodie Lane, vith Mrs. C. J. Bcilman, Sulherlin, dis trict director of Umpqua No. lti, as special guest and Mrs. Dorothy Stein in charge of the program. She will show a film, "Realm of the Wild." Unable To Have Visitors - Charles Burnett, Winston, who is a patient at Douglas Community Hospital, is reported improving, but is still unable to have visitors. Honeymooning Mr, anji Mrs. Joe Murphy who were married March 28 in Reno, fev., are spend ing their honeymoon in Arizona and Texas. Mrs. Murphy was the former Gladys Brown of this city. Improving Slowly Mrs. Edytlie Florence Keuey, who has been se riously ill and was only recent ly discharged from Douglas Com. munity Hospital, is reported to be slowly improving at her home in Roseburg. She is able to have her friends call. Now In Japarl Cpl. Robert Puc kett, USMC, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burnett, is now stationed at Iwakuni, Japan. His brother, Laurence, is stationed at Parks Air Force Base in California. Both boys were students at Roseburg High School before enlisting in the service. Uranium Drilling Crew Strikes Artesian Well KANAB, Utah l This south ern Utah desert community is in a tizzy over a strike made by a uranium drilling crew not far away. Uranium? No. Water flowing at 100 gallons a minute from an artesian well. As one old - timer put it: "With this kind of water, that area would be better than a ur anium claim." The well was discovered on ur anium claims owned by Standard Mining Co. of Salt Lake City and being drilled by Boyles Drilling wo. The party was given at the So- vietskaya Hotel to mark the 10th anniversary of the liberation of Hungary. It was the first public function at which, Malenkov had been seen by Westerners in Moscow In 12 days and there Had been wide spread speculation as to his where, about. ) Transportation Saving Possible, Board Points Out WASHINGTON m The govern ment could save 150 million dollars a year by consolidating its trans portation services, the Hoover Commission says. In addition, it said In a recent report to Congress, the govern ment should give a bigger slice of the three billion dollars it now spends for transportation to priv ate inausiry, wnicn me commis sion said badly needs it. The report was another in a series from the commission on or ganization of the government's executive branch. Former Presi dent Hoover heads the commis sion. ' It said all Defense Department transport should be put under a military director, and all that for civilian branches of the govern ment under a civilian director. It recommended that the De fense Department re-establish the Military Air Transport System, as a consolidated service. That would eliminate separate, and in some cases parallel, services set up for their own use by the Navy and Air Force since MATS was organ ized. The report was particularly crit ical of the Air Force system, which it said had been used to transport such things as blank forms, religious goods, athletic equipment, musical instruments. lumber and laundry and dry clean ing equipment. The Inference was that these could have been handled by cheaper means.
