The 19-year-old Pittsburgh resi dent got tied up in heavy traffic after attending a late afternoon class and failed to make an air plane connection to the Steel City in time for the banquet. He was honored as the outstand ing athlete for 1954 in the Alle gheny Mountain Assn. (western Pennsylvania) of the Amateur Ath letic Union. The dinner was spon aored by the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph. I The mam moth Willamette Relays, featuring some 2,500 athletes in a S-hour-long track meet, will be run off at Willamette University Satur day. , The athletes range from Fortune Gordleu, world recordholder in the discus throw, down to young hopefuls just starting their track careers in high school. Gordien, former University of Minnesota athlete, whose record throw was 194 feet, 8 inches, will give an exhibition in discus throw ing. There will be red-hot competition for the entries from 22 Northwest colleges and 101 Washington and Oregon high schools. In the college 100-yard dash di vision, for example, there will bs two men who have run the event in 10 seconds flat, and five others who have bettered that time. They include Washington State's Bob Garv at 9.6 seconds.
