Prison Authorities Studying Liquor Making By Convicts BOSTON m Authorities Wed nesday were investigating charges that liquor is manufactured at the Massachusetts State Prison, that organized gambling flourishes there and that hundreds oi inmates live in terror of a group of des perate convicts. The charges were made Tuesday by six state prison guards, who asked that their names be with held for their own safety,' They said the group of desper adoes has virtually taken over con trol of the ancient prison where five guards were held hostage for 84 hours by four inmates last Jan uary, - Expressing their views at a 'news conference called by the AFL SPECIALS THIS WEEK! Up until now they've gottcr away with everything but murder and haven't been punished." They said the lives of guards are endangered daily because the four rebellious prisoners were not punished for their desperate, but futile, attempt to break out. A grand jury returned no Indict ments in the matter after Superior Court Judge Paul G. Kirk asserted that "no good" would be accomp lished by trying the convicts who already are under long sentences. The guards said the seven-man citizens' committee which brought about the convicts' surrender last January inadvertently did more harm than good. - "It's common talk among the in mates," the guards i;aid, "that the four revolt ringleaders were prom ised concessions." The group of citizens said at the time of the successful negotiations with the prisoners that no conces sions or promises were made. Erwin D. Canham, editor of the Christian Science Monitor and chairman of the citizens commit ted said Tuesday night the com mittee s.ands by that statemen. He added, however, that the com mitee undoubtedly will meet in the near future ard issue a state ment on the guards' comments.
