MISS GATES SPEAKS AT GLENDALE PTA The Glendale Parent Teacher Association met at the high school Monday evening. Attendance was excellent with a probable 250 per sons present. The president, Mary Worley, an nounced that the organization now has 153 members. Mrs. Bak er's room won the prize for the largest number of parents present. On the program were, a group of winter-season songs presented by the four second grade rooms. These were followed by a play given by children of Mrs. Ann Bar tie's third grade room. Georgia Mill presented a piano solo. Special speaker tor the evening was Miss Jane C s of Roseburg, Douglas County . representative, who outlined therograms of the clubs and urged that clubs - be formed in the Glendale area. Miss Gates stated that there are now some 1100 4-H members in the county. , The program was concluded by several numbers by the band un der the direction of the school mu sic instructor, Bob Carter. The Rev. Guy Armstrong spoke brief ly. Mrs. Worley announced that the next meeting, Feb. 28, would fea ture Founder's Day. The fifth and sixth grade mothers served re freshments. HELPING HAND CLUB HAS . OFFICER ELECTION Mrs. Martha Danchok entertain.' ed members of the Helping Hand Club at her home recently. Elec tion of officers was held with the following results: president, Mrs. Helen Niday; vice president, Hel en Stone and secretary-treasurer, 11a Bishop. Delicious refreshments were served by Mrs. Danchok to Mrs. Isabel Caley, Mrs. Ila Bishop, Mrs. Delia Schnore, Mrs. Helen Stone, Mrs. Helen Niday, Mrs. Mabel Walbrecht, Mrs. Catherine Welch, Mrs. Lillie Guiliams, Mrs. Edith McCartney, Mrs. Dolly Jamieson, Norma Mangas, Teresa and Kevin Stone, Sally Mangas, Rita Sue Schnore and Alvin Bishop. A spelling bee and games .were enjoyed with prizes being award ed to Norma Mangas, Mabel Wal- Drecnt and Helen Stone. The next meetine will be Feb. 16 at the home of Mrs. Dolly Jam ieson. ALPHA CHI CHAPTER PLANS DINNER AS CHARITY PROJECT The Alpha Chi Chapter of Epsi lon Sigma Alpha met at the home oi Airs. Joe Scallon Thursday eve ning. Preceding the meeting Mrs. Hal Zurcher gave a demonstra tion on cosmetics for the program. A report was given on the din ner to be held at the Wagon Wheel on February 12. Proceeds from the ticket sale will be given to the Crippled Children's Hospital in Eugene. Tickets may be obtained from any member. AUSTIN DRAKE HAS SPACE PARTY IN HONOR OF HIS NINTH BIRTHDAY Austin Drake, son of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Drake Sr., celebrated his ninth birthday Monday with "Space Party." The table was de corated with blue paper with silver stars on it. A large rocket in the center was filled with surprises for the guests. Small space men were used as favors. First speaker of the evening was Mrs. Henry Darby. Speaking on the jubject "She Walks In Beauty," Mrs. Darby admitted that although glamour through make-up is often an illusion, and it's possible to get magic out of a bottle, it must be remembered that health is the basis of beauty. ."To be beautiful we must work from the inside out." she said. She gave many interesting beau ty secrets suggested by the lam. ous Westmore brothers, adding in conclusion that the "beauty that goes beyond the surface adorn ment lasts through the years." At the end of her interesting talk, Mrs. Darby passed out sam pies of face powder, perfume, rouge ana hair cream from some well-known cosmetic companies. The second speaker of the eve ning! Mrs. William Semmler. pre sented a humorous talk on the subject "Eating For Fun." She discussed some of the foods used in the preparation of Mexican and Latin dishes and read excerpts from "A Taste of Texas," a book of recipes compiled for the ' Nei-man-Marcus store in Dallas. "Most canapes," quoted Mrs. Semmler, "can be classified into two categories: those that merely get you in the mood for dinner, and those that nearly get you out of it." After discussing different types of food in some detail, she hur riedly gave some tips on reducing. "There is only one machine," ehe admitted, "that is of any value in reducing, and that is a scale." When she finished her talk, she passed out cookies that had been made from the recipes in the Tex as cookbook. At the end of the program, re afreshments were served by the hostess. A social hour followed. DORMAN HOME IS SCENE OF MEETING The Academy of Friendship met recently at the home of Mrs. El don Dnrman with Mrs. George M. Jameson as co-hostess. HERCHER PRESENTS PROGRAM AT DILLARO WSCS The tragic need of the boys and girls of our day for a definite Christian environment, including grace at meals, worship together m the home, and worship at cnurcn was effectively presented by Mrs. Carol Hercher at the pro gram meeting of the Dillard Wom an's Society of Christian Service at the church last Thursday after noon. With the use of gospel singing, Bible reading and prayers she in- spired faith that much can be ac complished it we follow the in struction given from talks by Mrs. Vivian Laurance, Mrs. Neva Con rad, Mrs. Faye Johnson and Mrs. Clare Feenstra. The social hour was introduced by a delicious dessert-luncheon served to the 28 members and guests by the hostesses: Mrs. Ruth Laurance, Mrs. Helen Rummell and Mrs. Esther Gourley. At the brief business meeting a report was made of the shipping of four big boxes of warm clothing (72 lbs.) to Korea tnrougn cnurcn World Service. Another box was to be mailed soon to Esther Laird at Taejon, which contains cloth and sewing materials for her work with war widows. Mrs. Selma Do zier reported that the orphan girl In Seoul. Ah Choon Ja. celebrated her 14th birthday January 23 and that more pennies-a-day would soon be needed for her support. Mrs. Vivian Laurance will be the program leader, for the meet ing Feb. 17, and she will invite the lityrtle Creek WSCS to assist in tl.e program on "Recruiting Missionaries." LAUREL HOFFMAN IS HONORED ON BIRTHDAY Laurel Hoffman was honored on her fifth birthday at a party Sun day at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Hoffman. Games were enjoyed and prizes awarded. Gifts were presented to the guest of honor. ROSEBURG BADOURA CLUB HAS DESSERT LUNCHEON The Badoura Club, Nydia Tem ple, Daughters of the Nile, met at the Charles Morgan home Tues day for a 1:30 o'clock dessert luncheon. The afternoon was spent sew ing for the Shrine Hospital. Mrs. A. J. Young and Mrs. W. H. Car ter were appointed in charge of the year's sewing projects.
