Asked why her daughter' name appeare in the new directory in stead of her own, Mrs. Gordon Spickelmier said "she's all I have left." "My Husband was a tail gunner in a Navy plane," said Mrs. Soick elmier. "He was in that plane" that ! went down in the Yellow Sea a year ago. He'd been in the Navy 12 years. , "He ought in Europe and in 1 the PacUic, then in Korea. He en listed when he was only 17. But the war finally caught up with him. He was a wonderful guy.". ''' School Crowded Due to crowded classrooms at the Umpqua School, a temporary partition has been built in one of the larger rooms, giving a fourth room. Mrs. Thennej of Umpqua has oocn engaged as the teacher. The primary now nas Shirley Brown as teacher. The second and third grades will have Agnes Wilcox, the fourth and fifth have Myrtle Thennes and the sixth, sev enth and eighth grades will be un der Genevieve Murphy. Mrs. Mur phy is also the principal. Bonds for the new addition to the build ing were approved by the voters in December. Attend Meeting A group of 4-H members and leaders attended the 4-H. Leaders January meeting of the Douglas I county association in Roscburg. It was to acquaint the children in the ways of conducting their own meet ings and the duties of their offices The groups were divided as to the office of each club. The news t reporters were instructed by Miss Laura Olson ot tne news iteview. The presidents were addressed by M. A. Jones, who is president of the leaders group, the vice prcsi dents met with Jane Gates; the secretaries with Dorothy Williams, who is the secretary of the lead' ers: and the song leaders with Opal Munson, who is vice president ol the association. D wight W. Morrow Pastes Away At 81 ENGLEWOOD, N. J. ( Mrs. Dwight ' W, Morrow, noted edu cator and writer, is dead at 81. She was the molher-in-law of Char les A. Lindbergh. The widow of the former am bassador to Mexico and U. S. Sen ator died at her home Sunday night with members of her family at her bedside. Negro Doctors Raise Discrimination Cry ATLANTA 11 The Nationsl Aisn. for the Advancement of Col ored People charges that Negro doctor were discriminated against at tn American Cancer Society state meeting here last week. Officials ot the society's Georgia Division have denied the assertion, .saying thel complaint was brought about by an error in addressing invitations to the meeting. The N jACP said in a statement that the Negro doctors did not at tend any of the sessions because of what they considered an insult in being barred from the Society's luncheons and dinner. Calif., with Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Conley, who recently moved there from Roscburg. Enroute home they stopped in San Jose for a visit with the former's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs, Jaquin Fields, and in Corning with another un- icle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Victor (Dick) Burks and family. 'In Florida Winston friends of the W. F. Mc murryt have received news that the McMurrys are now on a winter vacation in Florida. Mr. and Mrs. McMurry, Civil Bend Avenue, left here in the fall and after visiting relatives and friends in Minnesota and other points of interest along the way have arrived in Tarpon, Fla., and plan to remain there until their return to Winston in the spring. Mi's. Albin Nelson, Winston Christmas Seal Chairman reports that to date the sale in this area has netted a record $232.50. Were Wins ton, Dillard and Roberts Creek The Laurances have just return ed from a three weeks vacation trip through Nevada, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Mexico. They were accompanied on the trip by Mrs. Laurance's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Loftiu (Josie Norris). In Tucson, Ariz., the group visited the Bert Laurance family and Mrs. Mercy Buell. In El Paso, Tex., they visited with the Lof tin's grandson, Larry, a member of the armed forces stationed at Biggs Field. During the Laur ance's absence their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Earle Oakley, were in charge ot their ranch.
