STOC HOURSi :30 a. m. tt) 4:10 p.m. Security System Causes Suspicion, Says Scientist WASHINGTON Oft -,'div Vanne- var Bush, one of the nation's top wartime scientists, says the pres ent security system has created an "air of suspicion" which is do ing "great damage" to the efforts of scientists to develop modern weapons. Bush told a House subcommittee last June that "the way in which our security system is working at tne present ume is driving a wedge between the military and scientific people of the country." In his testimony, made public Monday. Bush said the reaction of three out of four scientists work ing with the government both in Washington ana, in the Held was summed up by the reaction of an unnamed friend, once in top war time councils. He quoted the friend: "Well, we have practically stopped working. It is quite impos sible to accomplish anything in this atmosphere'." Bush.t president of the Carnegie Institution and wartime chairman of the Research and Development Board, joined other scientists in testifying before a House govern ment operations subcommittee in vestigating the status of military research programs. Four Car Traffic Crash Sends 1 5 To Hospital TACOMA W A four-car crash Involving a Greyhound bua neat Fife Corner on Highway 99 Tues day morning sent at least IS per sons to three- hospitals. None was killed. Most seriously injured was William Hand, 30, Kent, driver of a Seattle meat company truck, who had a broken back and pelvis. Hand's truck was hit head-on by the bus. The driver of the bus had not been identified. According to Ted B. Johnson, Kent, a truck driver who saw the accident, a car had stopped for a left hand turn on the highway and a panel delivery stopped behind. The bus came up behind the panel truck. aoDlied the brakes, and skidded on the wet pavement into the Danel truck. Site Selected For New Oregon Reformatory SALEM Ufl The Orexon Board of Control voted Monday to locate toe new state reformatory is miles north of Salem. It said it wants to buy the 425 acre Williams and Hart Ranch. which is. located off the Saiem- Newberg Road, three mues south of St. Paul. The site will1 cost tiO.OOO. Final decision on the site will be made by the State Emergency Board, sere Nov. 5. . Oregon's two penal institutions now are the Boys School at Wood burn, and the penitentiary 1 at Salem. The reformatory would be for boys too tough for the boys school, but who are not considered tough enough to be placed with hardened criminals at the prison.
