The personal misdoings of peo ple prominent in the Republican Party are sometimes overlooked while at least three men promi nent in the Oregon Democratic Party have had their misdeed "splashed" in the big city papers, Sweetland said. He deplored, too, what he called "sterilization" of many editorial pages and their actual disappear ance from half of Oregon's news papers. . He said "reports are slanted on some occasions" but he said that the Journal and the Oregonian are better than California dailies and better than those of Seattle. He said, too, that the Portland dailies' editorial pages are "better than most newspapers in the nation." But there is a "massive influ ence" in attacks of the metropoli tan dailies which must be answer ed and he suggested precinct news letters, especially in the weeks just before election. Sweetland, who is publisher of the weekly Milwaukie Review, said that of Oregon's newspapers, 85 per cent are Republican, and of thestate's 21 dailies, 17 are Re publican, three independent and only one Democratic. In addition to giving editorial support to their party, there is in the metropolitan press the double standard, he said, which led to lengthy stories of Democrats in trouble, but to at least partial sup pression when on Saturday night the chairman of the Patterson-for-Governor Committee, Ted R. Gamble, was arrested at a restaur ant.
