1 Fire Fighters Halted An Hour By Rattlesnakes GRANTS PASS Wl A 200-acre forest and brushland fire was brought under control here Wed nesday nigrht, but just as four fire fighter! thought the excitement was over they found out it was just beginning. The same fire that had taken them to the top of a hill had also driven a host of rattlesnakes up there. It was dark by that time and the four didn't know which way to step without landing on a rattler. So they didn't step at all. They stood still for an hour. They said they were prepared to stand there all night, but fortunately they had a walkie-talkie with them. The fire started near railroad tracks 1 V4 miles west of Grants Pass, and for 'a time threatened the homes of Mrs. . M. Radcliffe and Mr. and Mrs. George Ander son. Members of the Calapooia Rust lers 4-H Livestock Club have been busy this month discussing fair projects, judging classes of sheep and visiting a local dairy, accord ing to club members. Early In July they heard re ports concerning 4-H summer school from members Norma Jean Wilcox and Boyd Knechtel. July 8 they welcomed two new mem bers. Ronald McCoy and Leon Martin. They also judged sheep classes at two ranches. Last week, they were shown through the Melrose Dairy by L. Chitwood, one of the owners. According to club members, Chit wood also explained the judging of dairy cattle to the club. Mem bers then judged a class of Jersey cows. visiting at the home of their son, Gene Anderson. , . . The three dens of Cub Scouts met last Wednesday evening' for a potluck picnic supper at the Beckley picnic grounds. About 40 people were present. The scouts enjoyed a ball game following the supper. The Inter Church Fellowship meeting was held Monday evening at the Christian Church. A musi cal program was given for those present. Chairman Philip Ryan conducted a short business meet ing. The women of the church then served refreshments. Mrs. Robert White of Grants Pass is visiting at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs, Carl Licklider. .
