Natural Cas Decision Blow To Portland Firm PORTLAND m The decision of the Federal Power Commission to permit gas to be piped from the San Juan Basin to the Pacific northwest was a defeat for the Portland Gas Co., biggest gas dis tributor in the Northwest, which had backed a Canadian proposal. Charles H. Gueffroy, president of the Portland firm, said he would defer direct comment, but pointed out that both leading pipeline con tenders had spent a mil'ioa dollars in promoting their plans and the loser, Westcoast Transmission Co., Inc., might well go to court to up set the FPC decision. Westcoast would have brought in Canadian gas. Gueffroy's firm con tended that the Canadian gas would be both cheaper and avail able in greater volume.
