Ft. Mommouth Officer
Asks For Retirement
BATONTOWN, N. J. Lfl The
Army's chief intelligence officer it
Ft. Monmouth, which has been the
target of a probe by Sen, McCar
hy's Senate Investigations sub
committee, has applied for retire
ment on health grounds.
Andrew J. Reid, M, Eatontown,
has been in the civilian post since
1946. He said he suffered a heart
attack Dec. 27 and has not been
back on the job since. He said
last night he applied for retire
ment April 6.
Reid was praised by McCarthy
for doing a good job at Ft. Mon
mouth. The intelligence agent had
testified before the subcommittee
in Washington Dec. 9.
McCarthy claimed an espionage
ring operated at the supersecret
radar laboratories in the fort, A
loyalty-security check there re
sulted in the suspension of 35 ci
vilian employes, some of whom
were later reinstated. Secretarv r,f
Ine Army Robert Stevens said
there was no record of current
espionage there.
General To Talk Plans To Train Native Armies

Gen. John W. O'Daniel is expected
to leave Saturday for Manila to
discuss with Defense Secretary

armies in Indochina.
The chief of the military and
advisory mission here will carry
with him fresh impressions of
visits to training centers in Vici
Nan, Laos and Cambodia as well
as important conversations a few
days ago with France's chief of

vocate of American aid in training
the Vietnamese, is believed to
YMCA Seeking Nurse
For Summer Session
The YMCA is looking for a
nurse to attend the summer camp
session at Diamond Lake, start
ing July 1, reports Camp Director
Don Naden,
Naden states that a practical
nurse will be needed at least. He
says work would be voluntary. Al
though no pay is involved Naden
points out it would make a good
vacation for the nurse He asks
that anyone interested call him
at the YMCA office in Roseburg.

Myrtle Creek Schools
Add Three Teachers

The Myrtle Creek School Board
voted to consider Hie hiring of a
third person in the music depart
ment to be included on the 1955-56
school budget at the May 18 meet
ing. R. L. McClintic, band director,
stated that with the increase in
enrollment, no beginnin g . band
students would be able to try out
next year.

Three new high school feathers
were hired by the board. Earl
Miller from Eugene will teach so
cial science, English, Spanish and
be an assistant football coach.
John Hakanson of Eugene will
teach social science in Hie high
school and Lisbeth Miller of Eu
gene will teach English, speech
and drama. Supt. Al Neet report
ed that only one vacancy on the
high school staff needs to be filled
and possibly one in the grade
school.
