Wash. ( Gov. Langlie Wednesday laid the leai ership of the Washington State federation of Labor has been more intciested in politics than engineering in connection with the Hells Canyon issue. In commenting on testimony presented by federation President Evan Weston before the Federal Power Commission, Langlie said he invited the federation to ap point an engineer to get the facts on Hells Canyon. "This the federation leadership saw fit not to do so," Langlie said, "though many of the members who contacted me following the meeting indicated it was a good idea. "I feel the leadership of the State Federation of Labor has been more interested in the politi cal philosophy of the matter than they have been in getting the engi neering facts of how Hells Canyon would serve the people of the Pa cific Northwest and the question of the cost of power that might be developed as compared to lower cost power at other sites." Weston testified that the federa tion reaffirmed its stand in favor of a federal dam at Hells Canyon !n 1953 "after Gov. Langlie put in a plea, song and dance not to go for the high dam as it would be stupid." Langlie said "I merely pre- seniea me issue to tnem in a speech frankly discussing the var ious phases uf power development problems dealing particularly with Hells Canyon dam. As to Weston's testimony that unemployment was "severe" io j the Pacific Northwest, Langlie aid: Mr. Weston is not presenting he accurate picture as far as un employment in the state of Wash ington. Actually there are 10,000 more people employed in this state at this time than there were a year ago.
