war against pesky tent caterpillars
Tuesday, as the invaders left their
filmy nests in trees and shrubs to
munch on the greenery.
The caterpillars apparently are
widespread in Northwestern Ore
gon. County agriculture agents
warned that the caterpillars should
be killed promptly or the infesta
tion will get woree.

tion's drought area, after damag
ng flash floods hit Southeastern
New Mexico.
The wet belt extended over the
central Plains and in Southern
Texas. Heavy rains earlier this
week at Koswell and Lovinaton.
N. M., caused damages estimated

city of 30,000, was declared a dis
aster area bv Gov. Edwin Mechem
of New Mexico.

Arizona Prison Escapee
On Most Wanted List
WASHINGTON I John Alfred
Hopkins, convicted murderer who
escaped from the Arizona state
prison last Nov. 10, was added
Tuesday to the FBI's list of "10
Most Wanted Men."
Hopkins. 38, is described by the
FBI as a dangerous gunman who
started his criminal career as a
burglar when he was only 17. He
has since been arrested many
times and has served two jail
terms in California for forgery and
car theft.
When Hopkins escaped from the
Arizona penitentiary, he : had
served about eight years of a life
sentence for the 1945 killing of a
police officer at Wickenburg, Ariz.
The offiatr had surprised him as
he .was burglarizing a drug store.
Hopkins, a native ot hnokane.
Wash., is. of medium height and
build, with brown hair and blue
grey eyes He walks with a slight
limp and has bullet scars on his
left wsis.t, loft- leg and the ab

Begin Irrigation
A number of farmers in this
area are being forced to irrigate
because of a much-needed rain.
Winds have been hot and dry,
leaving some crops without suf
ficient moisture. However, bed
ding plants such as tomatoes and
cabbage and early spring gardens
that withstood the May 1 frost,
are thriving.

European countries with big mer
chant fleets have protested against
legislation requiring that American
ships must carry at least half of
foreign aid cargoes.
Countries sending in written
complaints to the State Depart
ment include Britain, Italy, West
Germany, The Netherlands, Nor
way, Sweden and Denmark. An
eighth, Finland, is reported pre
paring to add its protest.
All these governments nave said
