I Ralph E Flanders (R-Vt) tongue lashed Sen. McCarthy (R-Wis) in the Senate Tuesday, he wiped out this previous self-appraisal: "I am a large collection of un-i spectacular things." I rlanders told the benate that McCarthy, 'by Intention or through ignorance," was "doing his best to shatter" the Republi can Party. Flanders' speech was .one of the first instances in which a Repub lican has spoken out so strongly against tlie Wisconsin Red-hunter, but its biuntness came as no sur prise to friends of the onetime Vermont toolmaker. Despite frequent claims that 'I am strictly an amateur at this business" and his comparative newness in politics. Flanders has Uiever been bashful about speaking nis minci. in tact, ne often 'has flustered party big-wigs with his frankness. . . ' As a freshman senator at 67 he now is 73 he upset soma Re publican elders in the 80th Con gress by ignoring unwritten law that first termers should be seen but not heard. Flanders joined some other freshmen in a letter to the Senate Republican leadership demanding a larger share in policy making. They won. Then Flanders and other GOP juniqrs suggested to the late Sen. Robert A. Taft (R-Ohio), "Mr. Re publican" himself, that in Taffs sweeping criticisms of former President Truman's anti-inflation ftroposals he should make it clear le was iperking for himself, not for the party. Taft complied. The Piumo. stooD-shouldereH unit lantern-jawed Flanders, with his gom-rrmmeo: spectacles, thinning gray hair and bristly mustache, looks more like the mechanic draftsman engineer - inventor- author that he is than like a cru sading politician. Long before entering politics in 1946 as the appointed successor to. Sen. Wan-en Austin (R-Vt). Flan ders was recognized as a political economist. But Flanders' business and po litical successes have been won with only a minimum of formal education. He had a mere eight ak.. , I 1 I. ,T- but now holds honorary degrees from leading universities . and wears a Phi Beta Kappa key on his watch chain. After his appointment to the Sen ate, Flanders was elected to a six year term and then reelected on Nov. 4. 1952. His present term ex pires in 1959. . . - , ,. . Commentator Offers McCarthy Time On Program NEW YORK Wl - CBS common tator Edward R. Murrow says Sen. McCarthy rIt-Wis has Wn "rnn. fusing the public mind" about communism and overatnoninv th line between "investigating and pvisevuung. Murrow added in hls 'Meeast Tuesday .night that If McCarthy wished to answer these comments, "an opportunity will be afforded him on this program." ine commentator, who li also a member of the CBS board of di. rectors, made his remarks In the midst of a fight by McCarthy to force CBS and NBC to give blm free time to answer a soeech made last Saturday by Democratic lead er Adiai E. Stevenson. The two networks turned Mc Carthy down after giving the Re publican National Committee time for reply to Stevenson. Vice resident Nixon was picked for the job. Murrow said m his program the need for investigation by congres sional committees cannot be denied. -PKlttKUfA MlUC.j, EACH PAV RAIN IOMSa OH PtIM BUILDING CONSTRUCTION; .
