Future Of TVA Up To Congress UTACUrhTrvi'vi.T - .. ..miwiun un wiliat's go ing to happen to the Tennessee Val ley Authority in 1954? That question was in the minds of friends and foes of TVA alike Wednesday as the new session of Congress opened. The vast government agency can !e wt!. flwer "venues as it sees fit, but it must get appropriations from Congress to finance its ex panding power program. And Congress, at its past ses sion, refused to appropriate 30 mil lion dollars for starting a . new team-electrlc plant near Memphis. TVA undoubtedly will ask funds again this year to start the plant which it says Is needed to meet the growing power needs in the Memphis area of the valley. That apparently is the top ques tion in the TVA controversy. But there are others. There has been some talk of selling the TVA's power facilities to private indus try. However, no bill has been proposed to authorize such a sale. , But Rep. Dondero (R-Mich), chairman of the House Public Works Committee, is planning early hearings on his bill to amend the TVA act so that mu nicipalities served by the agency could construct their own supple mental power plants or buy power from private utilities. His bill would eliminate the "sole supplier" clause in TVA contracts which prohibits municipalities and cooperatives from obtaining power elsewhere. The measure also would abrogate TVA's control over local resale rates Just how this measure, if adopted, would affect the TVA is a matter of conjecture. Some say it would cripple the agency. Others declare the effect would only be minor. CHILDREN HAVE OWN RESORT CHICAGO Wl If you see chil dren studying Florida vacation folders these days, there's a rea son. State Board To Hold Portland Milk Hearing , PORTLAND Wl The State Board of Agriculture will decide next Monday when to hold another hearing on the proposal to raise milk prices in the Portland-Salcm area. Chairman E. Riddell Lagc, Hood River, said it protnbly would be late this month or early in Feb ruary. The board earlier ordered a cant-a-quart increase for the area; but postponed it on order of Gov. Paul Patterson, who objected to the fact that no prior public notice had been given of the board's meeting. A hearing held after the governor's action brought protests from con sumers and some dairymen against a price increase. The board took no action then.
