TO MEET FRIDAY ' The first ' meeting for 1954 of Riversdale Home Economics Club will be held Friday, Jan. 8, at a 12:30 noon potluck luncheon at the home of Ida Kuck at Winchester with Ethel Fuller as co-hostess. Those attending are asked to bring table service. All Grange ladies are asked to attend as the activities for the new year and year books are to be planned. Mrs. Williams reminded t h e group that the next executive council board meeting will be held Jan. 25 at 1:45 p.m. in the teachers' conference room of the new school building. She also brought to the atten tion of the members at the meet ing that applications for the schol arship fund have to be in by Apr. 1. PTA members are encouraging worthy students who are interest ed in becoming teachers to apply for these scholarships. As part of the program Mrs. Art Andrus presented the officers of her 4-H group, and eaoh offi cer outlined his duties. The principal speaker of the eve ning was Miss Muriel Mitchell, Roseburg City Librarian, who ba Arnold. Mrs. Amy Baker. Marion stated the importance of develop ing in children eood eitiiomhin by making available to them books?1 stressing personal integrity, ad justment to one's environment, sportsmanship, and social con sciousness and rmarked, "In us ing books as bridges to better cit izenship, we go along with the children across these bridges." She added that many delightful books for children had been print ed during the last ten years. Children's books dealing with crafts and hobbies were discussed by Mrss Mitchell, who empha sized their importance because "a ohtld with many interests will be a better citizen than one who is bored with life." She illustrated her talk by show ing many books from the Rose burg Public Library which are available to children and deal with sports, government, children of other races, geography and his tory, and in summing up her talk stressed the importance of relig ious books for children and con cluded by reading a book entitled "Prayer for a Child" which was a Caldocott Medal Winner. At the conclusion of the meet ing the room count was taken with Mrs. Gordon Fruits' room winning the room count for having the most parents present. DINKY CREEK HILLBILLIES MEET AT WILSON HOME The December meeting of the Dinky Creek Hillbillies was held at the home of the president, Don Wilson. After a short business meeting the members exchanged gifts. Visitors present were: Mr. and Mrs. Chris Wulff, Susan, Linda and Johnny, and Mrs. Floyd Simpson. The next meeting will be held at the home of Judy Wullt Janu ary 14. x GOREN BRIDGE LESSONS TO BEGIN FRIDAY NIGHT Arthur Irvin, Master Goren Bridge instructor, will be in Rose burg, rnoay, Jan. a. m oegin in structions in the Goren Bridge System. Lessons will be held at the Umpqua Hotel. Beginners as well as experienced players are included in his classes, which will be held once a week for six weeks. MARCH OF DIMES BENEFIT TO BE HELD SATURDAY The annual March of Dimes benefit will be held Saturday. Jan 9, at 8 p.m. at the Riversdale Grange Hall. Mrs. Archie Amorde will have charge of the jewelry department of Mil ler's until Mrs. Barclay returns. Return From California Mr. and Mrs. William T. Evans spent New Year's Day in San Francis co. En Route they stopped in Stockton and stayed with friends. In San Francisco they met Mrs. Evans' brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. William D. Cowan, of Pacific Palisades On Hew Year's Day they watched the Rose Parade and four football games on television. Saturday they attended the East - West game. Before Christmas, the Ev ans spent several days in Seattle attending a Christmas party and other activities as guests of the Bearing Sales and Supply Co., for which Mr. Evans works. Enters Hospital Roy Edwards of Umpqua entered Community Hospital Monday for medical treatment. Surgery Mrs. Delia Rolls of Roseburg was admitted to Com munity Hospital Monday and un derwent major surgery there Tues day morning. Visitors Leave Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Newell have left for their home in Goldendale, Wash., fol lowing a visit in Roseburg with the latter's two sisters, Mrs. J. C. Reese and Mrs. Agnes Jordan. Back From Berkeley Mr. and Mrs. William Shaw drove to Ber keley for New Years to visit her son and daughter-in-law. Mr. Shaw returned to Roseburg Sat urday, but Mrs. Shaw remained for a longer visit. To PortlandIames W. Watts, district forester here, is in Port land for temporary assignment at the regional office of the Bureau of Land Management. He left last weekend and expects to return Jan. 16. Leaves For Base Pic. George E. Hawksworth, who is stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C., arrived in Roseburg the Tuesday before Christmas to visit bis parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Christmas Eve, he was the guest of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Sutton, and son, Dennis. A family gathering was held Christmas day at the Hawksworth home. Pfc. Foley. Pvt. Foley will leave Jan. 12 for Fort Sheridan, 111., for reassign ment to the Fifth Army area.
