Cottage Grove Ruins Roseburg's Opener lit Mew Gymnasium, 57-38 Lions Take Backboard Control - To Outdo Indians In Fast Game By JIM VANCE Sports Writer, Nw-Rvlw Cottage Grove made uiseburg look rather ineffectual Saturday night in defeating the Indians be fore the season's first home town crowd in the new gym by a score of 57-18. Both teams put on some what unpolished performances in the newly polished interior, but the Indians were the more obscure in the brilliant surroundings. Six-foot seven and one-half inch center Stewart Burge and forward Norm Abeene swept the boards clean much of the game for the visitors, and a shifting zone de fense lent support to the Lion cause, giving Uie Indians few un obstructed opportunities to shoot. With starting Indian guard Don Carter sidelined with five fouls in the second quarter, Cottage Grove outran the home team when it chose to do so and coupled with alert defensive wont wrapped ev. erything up in a nice maU pack- shot, although substitute George Donnelly and starting forward Brian B00U1 made some nice one- handerj for eight and seven points respectively. Liens Win Backboards- Other creditable performances were produced by center Jim Gil bert and forward Erv Darling who struggled with the taller Burge tor the backboards. When Gilbert left the game on fouls in the final ehuckcr, the Lions had things pret ty much their own way around the baskets. Koseburg made 11 field goals and hit 16 of 33 free throw at tempts. Cottage Grove made 17 field goals and 23 of 35 free throw tries. Abeen was high point for the game with w and Burge was second with 12. WATCH FOR IT AT PENNEY'S Moose Lodge became first half league champion of the Industrial Basketball League over the weekend as YMCA officials an nounced decisions on several pend ing cases involving unplayed games and forfeitures. The first half titlists ended their league play with an unofficial record of seven wins and one loss. However, under a new ruling, both Moose and the Junior Cham ber of Commerce teams will not be awarded victories gained over the Drain team which withdrew after only two rounds of play. An identical situation would have been reached If each of the other six league teams had been award ed a viotory automatically after the Drain withdrawal. Moose became the mathematical champion when, in anotner major moove, y.vhja league otnciais awarded Sutherlin Drive In a for feit victory over the only mathe matical contender to Moose, J. C. Sporting Goods. Before the ruling was announced, J.C. possessed a record of three wins and one loss. The ruling shows the sporting goods team out of contention into third place in the standings with a 3-2 record. J.C. failed to show up for their scheduled game with Sutherlin and were granted a postponement. But the rulesmakers have since con cluded that Sutherlin was within its rights in demanding a forfeit win. In a third decision, Dillard Meth odist lost its only win of the sea son, gained over since withdrawn Faith Lutheran, to take over un disputed possession of the cellar in the Church League. ' YMCA secretary Don Naden an nounces, that the Industrial League will attempt to make up four games which have been sched uled over the holidays at a con venient date, if possible, before the second ha" of league play begins Jan. 5, Present plans call for no games in any of mo YMCA leagues be tween now and the first of the year. Bulldogs Stop Oakland, 55-37 Oakland led a favored Sutherlin Bulldog team 26-25 at halftime but wilted in the third and fourth quar ter before a blistering scoring at tack paced by Ron Hix and .Ted Buck of the Bulldogs, to come out on the short end of a 55-37 argu ment at Oakland Saturday night. The lead changed several times in the first quarter which endol with the visitors ahead 104. In the second quarter, Walt West's began hitting and pulled '.head 18-12, a lead which they maintain ed with one minute left in the first half. Sutherlin closed the gap to 26-25 at halftime. With Hix and Buck maintaining the late second quar ter pace through the final two periods, the Bulldogs took a 39-29 Uiird quarter lead, which they stretched to game's final 18-point margin. Buck and Hix were high with 15 and 14 respectively while Doug Card, who scored seven proved to be a tower of strength round the backboards for the Bulldogs. Lindsey took the first fall at 3:14 with a pin hold but Kindred came back with head butts and a press to even it up two minutes and 15 seconds later. The enraged Lindsey stormed back into the ring for the third and deciding fall. After a brief, but bloody, scuffle in the ropes, which floored referee Tony Ross, Lindsey emerged the winner with a strength-sapping full nelson that left Kindred helpless for a press. Other events on the interesting card saw Proud Prusian Kurt von Poppnheim take one fall from Danno McDonald at 20:39 with a German cross bow, and then stave off the Scotchman': thrusts in the remaining moments of their enter taining 30 minute semi-tinai.
