STOCKHOLM, Sweden in
Stockholm police staged their 14th
hunt Saturday for prize jail es
capee Karl Wilhelmsson. This time
the prisoner vanished from his
own weddiag.
Authorities let Wilhelmsson, who
is serving a term for theft, out of
prison Friday so he could get mar
ried. They cautiously aent along a
policeman to keep an eye on him.
But during the wedding party
Wilhelmsson dashed out 41 door,
locked it behind him and escaped,
leaving a tearful, bride.
His earlier prison breaks includ
ed one in which he drove off in a
stolen car wearing his prison garb.
He excused his appearance to peo
ple he met along the road by tell
ing them, "I've been to a fancy
dress ball."

precedent for the appointment of
an American, 0. H. P. King of the
Dallas, Tex. bureau of the Asso
ciated Press, as consultant and ad
visor to the president of Korea.
Another American and both
men had Pacific Northwest back

Korea nearly 70 years ago.
King, formerly in the Seatble
bureau of the AP, left Friday for
Seoul. Judge O. N. Denny of Port
land went to Seoul to take a some
what comparable job in 1885.

Portland retailers who estimat
business from "about the same as
last year" to as much as 18 per
cent off.

for the drop. Other factors are pro
longed rainv weather, and. in the
opinion of at least one retailer, re
moval of the urgency for buying,
resulting from the end of hostilities
in Korea.
Generally department and furni
ture stores reported buying to date

But most point out that Christmas
shopping has been slow in starting
and has picked up in recent days.

which will bring business this year

Preferences are for more service
able items this year. Jewelry stores
in particular report a trend toward
useful household items, watches
which are more utilitarian than
decorative and small items such
as necklaces and pins. There is
more shopping for quality and
greater sales resistance.
Impulse buying, as one leading
retader described it. is less appar
ent, although this will increase as
Christmas gets close and shoppers
pick up things "that will do" for

Some retailers have turned to
advertising on television, which
made its advent in Portland just
little more than a year ago.
Many have stepped up newspaper
advertising, which emphasizes the
price appeal more than in past
years. Major stores are now open
nights until 'Christmas.
Few complaints have been re
ceived on consumer credit, tnougn

ed many customers asking for long
er credit terms than the. store is
willing to give. More buyers are
opening charge accounts in leading
department stores, under a new
city-wide system which simplifies
checking credit ratings.
"Measured by any normal stand
ards, ourChristmas business is a
healthy one, even if it doesn't

for a leading department store,
said. "There's nothing to be de
pressed about."
PORTLAND I W. H. Lynoh,
division engineer here for the U. S.
Bureau of Public Roads for 25
years, will retire Dec. 31.
He was in charge of the Helena,
Mont., public roads office from
LYNCH TO RETIRE
1922 to 1925, then went to Omaha,
and came to Portland in 1928.
Under him has been all federal
highway work in Oregon, Washing
ton, Idaho and Montana.
