Army Engineers At Dam
Yictims Of Big Theft
EL MONTE, Calif. Wl One of
the biggest thefts in years, by a
dam site, was being investigated
Tuesday by government agents.
Stolen Monday from the Whittier
Narrows dam site were three stor
age sheds; one chicken house; two
pumps and a 20 gallon pressure
tank.
All of the property belonged to
the Army's Corps of Engineers)
builders of the dam.

Deer Hunter Injured
By Shot Of Hooch
FLANDERS, N. J. ( New
Jersey's deer hunting season
opened Monday and one of the
first to be injured by a shot was
Malcolm Duffie, 36, of Kenvil.
Police said Duffie, apparently
stalkin? a big one, stopped to
warm himself with a snort from
an inside pocket. Leaning back to
quaff the liquid, they said, he top
pled over and cut his head on a
rock.
Later, in magistrate's court, he
was fined $50 on a drunk and dis
orderly charge.

THEY MARCHED TO HEALTH ON DIMES Patricia,
left, and Pamela O'Neil, pictured on the 1952 March of
Dimes poster, above, today are living proof of the efficacy
of aid to polio victims made possible by the National
Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Daughters of Mr. and
Mrs. Clarence O'Neil, of Raleigh, N. C, they were stricken
in 1948, during North Carolina's worst polio epidemic.
Today, Patricia, 6, and Pamela, 5, are visibly free of any
polio disability. This year's March of Dimes campaign,
which supports the Foundation, will be held from January
2 through 31.

Civil Service System
Overhauling Advised
NEW YORK UH The National
Civil Service League said Tuesday
it had recommended to President
elect Eisenhower a complete reor-
ganization of the 2,500,000-employe
I federal civil service system.
It estimated a saving of one bil
lion dollars "or more" could be
effected annually in the civil serv
ice payroll of about 10 billion
dollars.
The league declared the United
States Civil Service Commission
was a prime example of "hier
archal buck-passing" and It ha
kept "good personnel methods ou
of government."
