Gladys Ward,
Missionary To
Be Speaker Here
Born in China of missionary par
ents. Miss Gladys Ward, herself
a missionary for many years,
will speak this Sunday morning,
Nov. 23, at the North Roseburg
Church, Evangelical United Breth
ren, on conditions behind the
Bamboo Curtain." The service is
at 11 o'clock.
After 28 years in that land of
"strange customs and ancestor
worship," Miss Ward has been
described as "truly more Chinese
than American." For a number
of years she served as DrinciDal
of the Evangelical United Breth
ren Girls' Siminary at Siu Laam.
AQS A PART of her work, she fre
quently conducted groups of na
tive uninese on tours ot evangel
ism in remote villages.
Following the entry of the Chi
nese Communist forces into the
Korean War, there was a marked
change in policy toward Christian
made to discredit American mis
sionaries, according to Mils
were held during which mission
aries were accused of tins and
crimes against China. These
meetings wtre followed by ex
pulsion or detention of individuals
as seemed best to the local au
thorities. The result was a rapid
and mass evacuation. These and
other experiences will he des
cribed by Miss Ward when she
speaks here.
i Thi3 Sunday's services will be
the last public appearance for
Miss Ward before she leaves for
further missionary work in the
Philippines. The public is invited
to hear her speak.
