WASHINGTON OB The United Stales may lave exploded the world's first full-scale hydrogen bomb and be keeping il secret. This year's nuclear weapons tests at Eniwetok, announced for the "autumn months," are either completed or nearing an end. They generally weio expected to in clude use of a standard atomic bomb to touch off enough hydro gen to produce a super-sized blast. The Atomic Energy Commission has made no announcement such as followed the previous mid-Pacific experiments beginning in 1948. All of these have been closed to the press and public, but restric tions were unusually tight Uiis YEAR. The AEC said they were to be conducted under full security provisions of the Atomic Energy Act. One source said there was no certainty there would be any announcement this time. The government has announced that the spring, 1951, series includ ed tests "contributing to the ther monuclear weapons research," a reference to the intense heat of a hydrogen explosion. Presumably, a small, experimental amount of hydrogen was used then. A full-seals test of an A-bomb might be the reason for the high degree of security imposed on Uie latest series. Divorced Folks' Club In Sweden Proves Popular STOCKHOLM Wi About a year ago a Stockholm merchant got a brilliant idea why not found a club for divorced people? Himself a divorced man of two years standing, he had had plenty of experience in the loneliness that results after the severance of mar ital ties and most of the contacts any couple holds in common. There were many people, both male and female, in the same pre dicament who rallied to help him with his project. The payoff: Stockholm, a city of many divorces but no night clubs, got its "divorcees' club." which may be the first organized pro of its kind. The club was a success from the first. It now has some 200 mem bers who meet once a week in a 17th century cellar in the "old town" with a genuine Parisian at mosphere. The "Friday Club," as it is called officially, has rigorous rules and regulations, however, and the qualifications of all are closely checked. At first a number of married persons managed to squeeze in. attracted no doubt by the obvious possibilities. Some elderly gentle men tried for membership. The rules now are very strict: only applicants who can prove they are bona fide survivors of an unhappy marriage, officially terminated, are welcomed to membership. Idaa Spreads Over Nation Kor a relatively modest fee, they get food, entertainment and danc ing once a week. The arrangement has been so successful and aroused so much interest all over Sweden that divorced couples all over the country are following the example and planning a nationwide associ ation. The Stockholm club membership includes several actors, dentists, buc'r.esmen, engineers and nurses and cuts through all strata of so ciety. At first, it was mainly newly divorced women who joined the club, seeking an escape from sud den loneliness. Now the dispropor tion between male and female members is beginning to disappear. The aim of the management is an even distribution. The board of directors often has found itself serving as a consulting bureau. Members with various post-marital troubles want advice on how to plan their future and seek the solutions from people who can speak from experience on the divorced person's problems. Conn recently ac- Election Dated At Myrtle Creek On December 4 The Myrtle Creek City Council Thursday night passed an ordin ance submitting a proposed an nexation of Catholic Church prop crty to the voters at a Dec. 4 elec tion. The new church has petitions for annexation. The election wiil be held in conjunction with elec tion for city officers and a vote on the new Myrtle Creek charter. The council also passed the char ter ordinance to submit the docu ment for voter approval. The Myrtle Creek council also authorized payment of construc t.on work done for the city hall unit, costing $19,375, and housing the police department, jail, and library. Johnny Winebarger was granted permission by the council to build a fence on a city street. Recorder G. D. Nyllenbeck explained the unusual situation like this: Myrtle Creek has dedicated street running two blocks along a section line. It's about 60 feet wide. The county also has a strip running along the section line. Right in the middle was a strip 22 feet wide which, until Myrtle Creek purchased it sometime ago, apparently didn't belong to any one in particular. In all, the street is about 100 feet wide. Winebarger's front yard takes In 20 feet of the city's dedicated street. He appeared at the meet ing Thursday night asking to buy tho property. The council declined to sell it, but figuring it would probably not need the property, gave permission to build the fence. Ike May Face Demo Congress Two Years Hence By WILLIAM F. ARBOGAST WASHINGTON un Statistics of almost 100 years confront President-elect Eisenhower with the bleak possibility of having a Dem ocratic Congress in mid-term. There will be a congressional election two years hence, with all 435 House and 32 Senate seats at stake. With only one exception, the dominant party in Congress has lost seats in "off-year" elections since 1858. The exception was In 1934 when Democrats boosted their margin in the house from 313 to 322 and in the Senate from 59 to 69. That was in the middle of Franklin D. Roosevelt's first term. In 1946 President Truman saw the Democrats lose enough seats to drop control of both the Senate and the House. Republicans will be in control of both the Senate and the House in the 83rd Congress, which starts its two-year term on Jan. 3. But their margin of numerical superiority is so slim in both branches that they cannot afford to lose many seats in the 1954 mid term election. On the basis of last Tuesday's voting. Republicans will have 48 seats in the Senate, not including Stevenson-Backor Wayne Morse of Oregon, and 220 or perhaps a few more in the House. A majority of the Senate is 49, which tho Re publicans will have if Morse votes with them in organizing the body: If Morse sides with the Democrats, the resulting 48-48 tie can be broken by Vice President-elect , Richard Nixon.
