DELBERT THOMSON OF OPHIR, ALASKA RECENTLY A reunion of relatives, old school mates and friends was held at the I. B. Thompson home near Dil . lard for Delbert Thompson of Oph ir, Alaska, who is visiting his broth er. A delicious potluck dinner was served at noon. Visiting was en joyed throughout ,the afternoon. Relatives attending were Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Thompson of Elk head; Mrs. Lillian Laurance and son, Tommy of Medford; Mrs. A. W. Aslin and two daughters of North Bend; Mrs. Agnes Gooch, . a sister, from Mt. Shasta, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Ed Katzmarck and son, Michael, of Roseourg; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Nichols and I. B. Nichols of Brockway. Friends attending were Mr. and Mrs.' Earl Agee, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Agee and Miss Millie Agee all of Roseburg; Charles and Sad ie Buxton of Brockway; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Heater, Lookingglass; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Burks, Dillard, : and the host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. I. B. Thompson. The guest v of honor,' Delbert Thompson, is one of Dillard's pi oneer residents, but has lived in Alaska for the past fifty years. -MRS. ROY HOLLENBACK HONORED AT PINK AND BLUE SHOWER. PARTY ' " Mrs. Roy Hollenback was the recipient of many lovely gifts at a surprise pink and blue shower giv en in her honor by Mrs. Jim Suiter and Mrs. Roy Woodall at the latter's lovely home October 23. An appropriately decorated cake and tiny diapers decorated the ta ble and suitable games were play ed with Mrs. Mildred Powell, Mis. Mary Jones, and Mrs. Fran ces Bonebrake winning prizes. After opening of the gifts, re freshments were served to Jackie Hollenback, guest of. honor, Caro lyn Groves, Neoma Stewart, Freda Sigfridson, Frances Bonebrake, Mildred Powell and Mary Jones. Unable to attend but sending gifts were Ester Robinson and Inez Simpson. SOCIAL BALLROOM DANCING CLASS WILL ADMIT MORE COUPLES The social ballroom dancing class for married couples held every Wednesday evening at the Roseburg School of Dancing will admit five more couples, accord ing to a recent announcement by Ralph Patterson. Married couples learning to dance are asked -to contact Mr. Patterson. Plans are being made for some extra dances and parties to keep the group dancing during the win .. ter. The first class meeting was held last Wednesday at the studio and proved to be most enjoyable for the group. COMMUNITY CHEST SALE OF TURKEY SUCCESSFUL An all day turkey sandwich ale was held at Umpqua Valley Ap pliance Saturday, Oct. 25. Pro ceeds of the sale went to the Community Chest. The three larg est turkeys in the county went into the electric range, .and were pur chased by the s(ore for one dollar per pound. Of the 100 pounds of turkey prepared, 500 sandwiches were served. People attending the philanthro pic sale pasted dollar bills on the store windows towards the chest, and $112.45 was donated. Umpqua Valley Appliance donated an elec tric range for auction and $205 was collected for that. SPOOK PARTY HELD FOR GARY GARRISON Gary Garrison was host Satur day evening from 6:30 until 9 p.m. at a spook party. The party was held at the home of his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Har rison in Winston. The rooms were appropriately decorated with a ghostly motif and a series of games were played. Refreshments carrying out the Halloween theme were served. Guests were: host, Gary Gar rison. Vcrna Straight, Linda, Gary and Mclvin Lander, John Richter, Stanley and Larry Klopack and Jack McCleary. BARBARA GOSSO AND RODNEY GUTMAN MARRY IN RENO, OCTOBER H Barbara Gosso, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Gosso Sr., of Rose burg became the bride of Rodney Gutman. son of Mr. and Mrs. Rich ard Gutman, Vencta, Ore., Oct 16, at the First Methodist Church in Reno, Nev. The newlyweds spent their hon eymoon at points of interest along the California and Oregon coast. They are now at home to their friends at 464 S. Main Street, Roseburg. The bridegroom is em ployed at Standard Stations Inc. MARJORIE MAHONEY ANO JOHN HARBOR ENGAGED Miss Marjorie Mahoney and John Harbor, both attending Ore gon State College in Corvallis, announced their engagement last Friday evening to John's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Harbor, while visiting with them here. Miss Ma honey is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Games of all kinds that kids play were on the program,,, and a "good time by all" was reported. Special treats were presented. Visiting was enjoyed during the afternoon. GLENDALE FOLK HOSTS TO DINNER PARTY Mr. and Mrs. Riley Furlong were dinner hosts to Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Beirlt on Sunday in Glen dale. It was a double celebration. The Bierle's wedding anniversary was Oct. 25 . and the Furlongs' anniversary was Oct. 23. WILL RETURN Mrs. Norman (Meryl) Hess will resume her association with Mil ler's Beauty Salon Nov.'l, accord ing to an announcement made by Mrs. Peyton (Ethel) Oderkirk. Mrs. Hess has been on a leave of absence from the business. History, Social Econ Classes Study Ballot: Democracy in action was being taught to senior high school stu dents through the recent "electiion" held there on the regular Nov. 4 ballot measures and candidates. Senior social economics and jun ior history classes had carefully studied the men and measures for many weeks before the vot ing, reports Ralph Scudder, his tory department head. Students even made campaign speeches in their classrooms. Freshmen and sophomores, who voted in their English classes, had no previous study on measures so voted only on the presidential and vice presidential candidates. The, Hi-Y Club at (he school handled the voting for these two lower grades, while the history and social economics classes took care of the juniors and seniors. Sutherlin Christian Churchmen Go, To Rally Twelve men and boys from the Sutherlin Christian Church attend ed the Quarterly Rally of the Dis trict Men's Ninety and Nine held at Winston, last Saturday night. The women of the Winston Chris tian Church served a dinner to those attending. The State president of the Ninety and Nine, Elmer Newton, was the speaker for the evening. The boy's quartet from the Sutherlin Church, ' composed of Bert Watson, Ona Liles Jr., Jimmy Weikel and Ed die Graver, sang a musical num- !ber, accompanied by Rev. Lloyd jWhitford at the piano. ! Slayer's Execution Blocked For Mental Quiz SAN RAFAEL, Calif. I Fri day's scheduled execution of Henry Ford McCracken was called off shortly after midnight by a court order to San Quentin prison au thorities to show whether the con victed child slayer is insane. Acting Superior Judge N. Charles Brusatori issued the last minute order in response to a peti tion brought to his home by Mc cracken's lawyer, James C. Mon roe of Santa Ana, Calif. The execution had teen set for 10 a. m. in the state prison gas chamber. McCracken was con victed of murdering 10-year-old Patricia Jean Hull of Buena Park, Calif. New York Times Stands Pat On Support Of Ike NEW YORK 13 The New York Times Friday reiterated its sup port of GOP presidential nominee Dwight D. Eisenhower, denying what it termed rumors that the newspaper would shift its support to Gov. Adlai E. Stevenson. In i news-box headed "The Times Does Not Intend to Change to Stevenson," the newspaper took cognizance of rumors "spread by word of mouth and by at least one radio commentator" that it would switch to the Democratic presiden tial nominee.
