Percy Craft, one of two candi dates for the office of mayor seek ing the position to be vacated by Mayor Albert G. Flegel, has had many yean experience in munici pal government. Croft was first elected to the city council in 1932, and held a teat on the council from Ward 1 until 1948, when he was no longer a candidate. He headed several committees and chairma,nned the street and park committees dur ing his last term. He still serves on the park committee by appoint ment. - A Roseburg resident since 1912, Croft and his wife reside at 332 N. Jackson, and he operates Percy Croft's Auto Repair at 332 N. Jack son. Ha is a member of Rotary and the American Legion. Arlo Jacklin Arlo Jacklin, a candidate for mayor of Roseburg, is a relatively new resident here, coming to this city 6V4 years ago. With his wife and two children, he resides at 804 Hamilton St. He operates the Jacklin News Agency. Jacklin came to Roseburg from Seattle, where he was in work similar to that in which he is now engaged. He attended Seattle Busi ness College and Bellingham Nor mal School. Active in civic affairs, Jacklin is immediate past president of Rotary, chairman of the Faith Lutheran Church board of ad ministration, past president and lieutenant governor of Roseburg Active Club, a Loyal Knight of the Elks and a member of the Masons. He was chairman of the city bud get committee at its last session. Roseburg has two candidates seeking the office of may or in the Nov. 4 election. They are Percy Croft, who served many years on the council up until 1948, and Arlo Jacklin. They are running for the office to be vacated by Mayor Albert G. Flegel. Flegel is now completing his third term, but has chosen not to run for reelection. Both Croft and Jacklin have been active in civic affairs. Two positions are open in both wards 3 and 4. Candi dates for the respective offices are William Adair, incumb ent. -Percy Varney, Don Bell and Rudolph Ritzman for Ward 3, while Dr. Byron Woodruff, serving by appointment, George Luoma and Harold Horn are the candidates for Ward 4. Present members of the council are Frank Ashley and Gordon Harness, Ward 1; Bernard Saar and Cecil Hugh, Ward 2 ; Adair and Jack Hart, Ward 3, and Harrison Wins ton and Dr. Woodruff, Ward 4. Hart and Harrison are not seeking reelection to their positions. Councilmen from Wards 1 and 2 have two more years to serve. Sims, 56, now Internal Revenue agent at Okla homa City, as commissioner of the recently created district " a. -"" s 8 Superintendent Discusses School Bill At PTA Meet By ILA QUIRKS' Kenneth F. Barneburg, Douglas County school superintendent, at tended a meeting of the Galesville PTA Oct. 24. The meeting was for a discus sion of the school reorganization bill, that will be on the ballot Nov. 4. Those attending were serv ed cake and coffee after the meet ing. Donna Rigsby was taken to the Forest Glen Hospital at Canyon ville last week for an operation for appendicitis and is now re covering. . Mrs. James Croff has been on the sick list for a few days- after an attack of flu. Mrs. Ethel Smith was confined to her home for several days from a flu attack. The Galesville PTA Is planning a halloween party for the young people of the community Oct. 31. Mr. and Mrs. Neal Tripp of Med ford were visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Qulrke last week. Miss June Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Johnson of Azalea, has returned from a few days at Forest Glen Hospital where she underwent surgery. Meeting Postponed On ac count of the Riversdale Grange bazaar to be held Saturday night, Nov. 1, the Riversdale Folk Dance Club has postponed its meeting from that date to Nov. IS. . ' n- 'A V U fit 1 l 1 I fi 1 Rudolf Ritzman " I i 4 t '.., i '., if-' 1 George Luoma George Luoma, attorney with of fices in the U.S. National Bank, and a Roseburg resident six years, is a candidate for councilman from Ward 4. With his wife, Fran ces, he resides at 500 E. Cass St. A graduate of the University of Oregon with degrees in business administration and law, he served during World War II in the air corps. He later handled publicity for Kaiser Corp. Portland. Luoma, immediate past presi dent and a director of the Cham ber of Commerce, is past president of the Douglas County Tuberculo sis and Health Association and headed the bond sales campaign. A participant in most fund raising drives, he is also active in Elks, Masons, Kiwanis and Roseburg Country Clu. Byron Woodruff Dr. Byron S. Woodruff, serving on the city council since April by appointment, is a candidate from Ward 4. An optometrist with offices at 137 N. Jackson St., he resides at 325 Glen St., with his wife and two children, Jeanne and Scott. Woodruff first came to Roseburg in 1935, and was graduated from Roseburg High in 1938. Entering military service in 1940 and being discharged in 1944, he attended Pa cific University at Forest Grove, receiving his bachelor's degree and later his doctor's degree. He was then elected for a four-year term, which he is now completing. A resident of 813 Short St., Adair and his son, Jack, operate Adairls Associated Service Station on N. Main St. He has made his home in Roseburg for 32 years, was manager for Pierce Auto Freight 10 years and in charge of trucking for Roseburg Lumber Co. before opening his service station. He has been active in community affairs, including Community Chest and other fund raising campaigns, is a member of the Masons, IOOF, Rebekahs, Methodist Church and Chamber of Commerce. He is chair man of the city council fire com mittee. Vote Nov. 4 V1 " 1 1 . AW Rudolph Ritzman of Ritzman Heating is a candidate for city councilman from Ward I. He oper ates his business from bis home at 1041 Wharton Ave., where he resides with his wife, Dora. 1 Ritzman is a past commander of Umpqua Post 16, American Le gion and has been active in pro moting American Legion junior baseball. He has also been active in Masons and the Shrine. He has been a Roseburg resident most of his life. Vote Nov. 4 Harold Horn Harold W. Horn, a candidate for the city council from Ward 4, heads Roseburg Refrigeration. With his wife, Mildred, and son. Dalles, he resides at 411 S. Jackson. They have two other sons, John, an at torney, and Robert, a partner in the refrigeration business. Horn is a member of the Rotary Club, Elks and Roseburg Police Reserves. He has been a resi dent of Roseburg since 1938, and owned and operated Horn's Super Cream before he took over the refrigeration business. Don Bell Don Bell, candidate for a coun cil position from Ward 3, is ser vice superintendent for Lockwood Motors. With his wife, Irene, and children, Bill and Nancy, he lives at 814 Nebo St. Prior to coming to Roseburg BVi years ago, he was with United Air lines. He is a Mason, member of the Chamber of Commerce and of the Fullerton Dad's Club. Percy Varney Percv M. Educat ed in Oregon schools, his nnivr. sity training Includes two veari nl law. Camas Valley Church Holds Layman Sunday Layman Sunday was observed at the Camas Valley Methodist Church Oct. 26. Guy Moore, rural mail carrier, gave the sermon, en titled "The Word of God." He was assisted in the services by Cecil Barnett, teacher, who read tho scripture, and by the lay leader, Mr. Marlen Yoder. Tha musical program consisted of a solo by Mrs. Lloyd Pope, accompanied by Mrs. Charles Crouch, at the .piano; and a Ger man hymn, sung a cappella by Johanna and Hildegard Krieger. The congregation singing was led by Marcella Stinnett, Vivian Par ton, Rozelle Brown and Carol Ral ston. Mrs. William Meeks, for merly of Camas Valley and now a 'resident of Glendale, played the piano for the services. BROKEN ANKLI Wood row Watson of Glendale was painfully injured at the Dol lar Mill Thursday evening when a slab fell on his foot, breaking his ankle. He was taken to the Forest Glen Hospital in Canyonville for treatment.
