Wed., Ocf. 29, 1952 Adelaide Applegate Dies At Yoncalla On Tuesday Adelaide Applegate, 73 of Yon calla, the eldest daughter of Mil ton and Sarah Applegate, early residents of the Yoncalla commu nity, passed away Tuesday, She was born in Yoncalla Nov. 17, 1878, and spent her entire life in that community. She is survived by two brothers, Minor and Aub rey Applegate, both of Yoncalla; a sister, Mildred Hobbs of Sacra mento, Calif., and several neices and nephews. Graveside services will be held Friday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m. at the Yoncalla Cemetery. Stearns Mor tuary of Oakland is in chargo of arrangements. Si Phone 2-2611 Clendale Church Talent Show Is Reported Success By MRS. GERALD B. FOX The home talent show, sponsored by the Women's Council of the Glendale Church of Christ, was rated a huge success. The show, held Oct. 21, was a collection of skits, readings and musical se lections by local people, and observers said they displayed some splendid talent. Mrs. Elsie Vincent was the director, and Rev. George Goode, pastor, was master of cere monies. The entertainment was held in the Glenda Theater, the use of which was donated for the occasion by Ralph Place. There was a near-capacity audience. Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Magby are parents of a baby girl, Glenda Joyce, six pounds, seven ounces, born at Forest Glen Hospital in Canyonville. Mr., and Mrs. A. W. Beerli of Glendale were dinner hosts to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Blaser and daugh ter Alice, Saturday evening, Oct. 18. The occasion was the Blaser's 22nd wedding anniversary. Mrs. Blaser entertained at a birthday dinner for her husband on Oct. 12. Guests were Miss Le onie Hull and Fred Hull from Grants Pass, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Blaser, Myrtle Creek. G. W. Hooper, Wolf Creek mer chant, is in the Veterans Hospital at Portland for a checkup and medical treatment. Harold Sheppard and Cliff Bird left Monday morning for Eastern Oregon to hunt. Walter Hurst,, stationed at the naval air station in Alameda, Calif., was a visitor at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hurst over the weekend. Walter has just been promoted to aviation store keeper, 3rd class. North Umpqua Road Contract Job Completed By MRS. ARTHUR M. SELBY The Kuckenberz Construction Co. completed its contract for the 2V4 miles of construction of the new North Umpqua Highway from Burnt Creek to Bogus ereek, last Friday and has moved out all its equipment. I he funderburk Construction Co. will have completed the relocation of the new highway from Idleyld Parle to Mc s place this Wednes day except for the oiling, which cannot be done until spring. This particular stretch of road was the most difficult achievement of the entire project of the new highway, as the company had to blast through and remove thousands of tons of rock, to make a straight level road from Idleyld to Mc's place, eliminating the old dan gerous narrow road winding around the high cliffs. Funderburk completed the new highway from , Lone Rock bridge to Idleyld Park several weens ago. Funderburk Construction moved its heavy equipment last week to Depoe Bay, to start work on a mil lion dollar contract which will take two years for completion. Kucken berg and Funderburk .brought in large crews of experienced men with their families. Some owned their own trailer houses, others rented cabins, so there has been quite an exodus from the Idle yld community. The Watts Construction . Co., which has the contract for 4'4 miles of new highway construction from Bogus Creek to Steamboat, built its own camp for the employes, and plans to work through the winter. The company expects to complete its contract one year from this November, as reported by Orville C. Hanson, resident engineer for the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads. Concert Guests To Need Member Certification Because of the large Community Concert membership, guests who will be attending Saturday night's concert must be certified with membership cards, the association announces. Membership cards have been sold to the capacity of the Junior High Auditorium, and guests un der the former arrangement can no longer be accommodated with out a card of a regular member. Saturday night marks the . ap pearance of the Longines Sym phonette, second in the series of the concerts. The program starts at 8:15. This group had its premier broadcast over Radio Station WEAF in New York in 1941 and has been continuously on the air since. During 1948 the Symphon ette mad its radio debut on Co lumbia Broadcasting System, and has .recently completed its third year cycle over the full CBS net work of 168 stations. ,. Vital Statistics Mrs. Ralph Bates, 26, Succumbs Here Tuesday Mrs. Ralph R. (Hazel Louise) Jates, 26, of 1436 Willow St., pass 'd away at a local hospital Tues- ay following a brief illness. She was born at Buffalo, Okla., Jov. 24, 1925 and was married to talph Robert Bates at Yakima, iVash., Aug. 24, 1945. She came to toseburg in June 1951 with her husband, .who is employed by the Pre-Mix Concrete Co. Surviving besides the widower are two children, Thomas Ralph and Tonl Lou Bates, of Rose burg; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Marshall, Buffalo, Okla.; her maternal grandfather, A. M. Clark, Buffalo, Okla.; four broth ers and four sisters, Warren Mar shall, Horton, Ore., Vern Mar shall, Toppenish, Wash., Mrs. Gene (Gerealdine) Burril, Owen Mar shall and Mrs. Robert (Daisy) Hod ges, all of Brewster. Wash., Bon nie, Jeanette and Ronald Mar shall, all of Buffalo, Okla. Her body has been removed" to the Long & Orr Mortuary and will be forwarded to Yakima, Wash., for funeral services there at the chapel of Shavr and Sons, Saturday at 11 a.m. Concluding services and interment will follow in the Tahoma Cemetery. Sutherlin Band Boosters Meet By MRS. BRITTIAN SLACK The Band Boosters Club will meet Monday evening, Nov. 3, at 8 p.m., at the Sutherlin High School building. All Band parents and any per sons interested in this project are urged to attend. The October meeting of the Band Boosters was held recently at the Sutherlin Senior High School Build ing, with Mrs. Ruby Holloway, pre siding. Mrs. Corwin Loving, chairman of ways and means committee,' re ported on projects planned for the year. It was voted to buy a dozen mu sic stands for the band, a conduc tors stand, and also stands for the bass drum and sousaphone.
