Winchell Faces Suit For Libel NEW YORK tfl The New York Post said Monday it has in structed its attorneys to sue Waller Winchell for libel because of state ments in his radio and television broadcasts Sunday night. Winchell, whose daily column ap pears in the Daily Mirror, and James A. Wechsler, editor of the Post, have been carrying on a running newspaper feud for sev eral weeks. The Post said: "As long as Winchell limited his scurrilities to the printed word, the Post felt that it could meet them in the arena of public dis cussion. "However, since he has carried his false and malicious accusations to the air where there is no ef fective means of rebuttal, the Post has no alternative except to resort to legal action." The Post said it aisi was su ing "other parties responsible" for the TV Radio shows. Winchell's broadcasts are carried over the American Broadcasting Company network. te Gulf Stream is more than 8.000 miles long from the Gulf of Mexico to the seas north of Norway. Offer Of Democratic Post Turned Down, Morse Says; Letters Approve His Bolt WASHINGTON (AP) Sen. Wayne Morse. R.-0re., said Tuesday he was offered a "very high post" by the Truman administration several months ago but turned it down because he thought a Republican should not serve in a Democratic administration. Morse told a reporter this was what he had in mind when he told the Portland Oregonian in a telephone inter view Monday that he had been offered a high position. He said the Oregonian was mis taken in Interpreting his statement as an intimation that representa tives of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhow er had offered him a high post if he would support the Republican presidential nominee. Morse declined to say what job .was offered him by the Democrats. However, it was understood that the post was the attorney general ship and that the offer was made last Dec. 20. That was about Uiree months before Attorney General J. He has not visited here for thirty years and is enjoying many re unions. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson are holding open house for all of the old timers to renew acquaint ance with their guest on Sunday at their home on Highway 99. Thompson has been visiting with his sister, Mrs. Fred Winston in Portland. He moved to Opir, Alaska fifty years ago but returned in 1921 for a short stay. Waekend Guests Mr. and Mrs. A. Blavins of Port land were weekend guests at tho home of Mr. mid Mrs. Roy Burks. Mr. and Mrs. E. 0. Nickerson have been entertaining Mr. and Mrs. Lejo Filippi of Richmond, Calif., from Saturday until Tues day of last week. On Monday Mr. Nickerson took their houseguesls and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Her-, cher on a drive below Grants Pass where they visited the House of j Mystery. Mr. and Mrs. Fillippi left Tuesday fur Junction to visit j relatives before returning to their home in Richmond. I Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Work-1 inger and son, Billy, formerly of Dillard but now of Grants Pass were visitors in Dillard Monday. They had been in Roseburg nego tiating for the purchase of a large new house trailer. Mrs. Everett llaumeser returned to her home Tuesday from the Community Hospital where she had been receiving medical attention for several days. Out of town guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Her chcr on Thursday were Mr. and Mrs. John Grady of Eugene. Mrs. Grady was formerly Miss Evelyn Cizad who resided in Dillard thirty-five years ago. After spending Thursday night in the Hcrcher home they returned to- Eugene on Friday. Word has been received by friends of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Rummell who were called to the home of his brother, Dr. and Mrs. Phillip Rummell in Eureka that Mrs. Rummell was critically ill with polio but had improved slight ly and was out of the isolation ward. Young two and a half year old Harry was the first of the three to have an attack which was slight. Stevenson Tax Report Disclaims Own Theory WASHINGTON Wt Republican Sen. The visitors included Richard F. Jarrett, George R. Putman, C. a. McKinley and Rod McCallum. They flew to Roseburg to attend the dinner session. The Multnomah Squadron is the oldest . in Oregon and one of the first in the nation. The Roseburg group, which has 30 members, decided upon new uniforms. Tentative plans were discussed with the Multnomah County members for formation of a state association. The business session was con ducted by Commander Ira Byrd. Byrd, Dr. E. 'V. Carter and Wm. H. Wishart reported on a trip by plane to Redmond last Thursday to meet with State Aeronautics Director Jack Bartlett to discuss civilian defense matters and or ganizational procedure. Represen tatives from similar organizations throughout the state participated. Monday night's meeting closed with presentation of motion pic ture film, "Operations Crossroad," dealing with the atomic bomb. The educational film was supplied by the Civil Aeronautics Authority.
