Is Operating In Its Twentieth Year Of Satisfactory Service In This Area Th importance of rock by-productt in the construction field cannot be over-estimated E. R. Metxger founded this Industry in 1932 to fill a need - Incorporated August 1, 1952 with Don Metzger as president and general manager. By R. KENNETH EVANS Realizing the importance of rock by-products in the po tential building of Roseburg, E. R. Metzer founded the Rose burg Sand & Gravel company in 1932. For twenty years this company has been an important factor, in the building of Roseburg as an industrial and commercial center. The majority of the sand and gravel that has gone into the con struction of the homes, commercial, public service build ings, schools and industrial plants has been supplied from the rock deposits operated by this industrial company. The sand and gravel is recovered from gravel-bars in the Ump qua river which have been laid down by "Old man R;ver" in the last thousands and thousands of years. Newhouse TRUCKS CATS . MANUFACTURING PLANTS AT: Roseburg, Oregon Myrtle Creek, Oregon Douglas Fir Plywood and Lumber' SALES AGENT: Clear Fir Sale Co., Springfield, Oregon E. R. Metzger, the founder of the Roseburg Sand & Gravel com pany was a building contractor for several years before he estab lished this industrial enterprise. The construction work .gave him a background of experience that emphasized the importance of good rock by-products for the satisfactory completion of any building and for its longevity. Therefore, when the. Roseburg Sand & Gravel company was estab lished he selected the best rock deposits available. Twe Plant Are Opersted ' There are two locations on the Umpqua river that are used to day. A rock crusher is maintained at the plant located at Melrose, where the boulders are crushed, screened, and the sand and gravel separated into various sizes. It is all washed and any surplus refuse removed. Another source of sup ply is the plant at Wilbur. The capacity for production at the Wil bur plant is approximately 125 cu bic yards per hour. The operation of the Melrose plant is more in tricate and its capacity for crushed rock, washed sand and gravel is from 75 to 80 cubic yards per hour. With these two sources of supply of sand, gravel and crushed rock, that passes the rigid specificatons and requirements of both state and federal govern ments, makes it possible to meet any major demand that might arise. A large stock pile of sand, gravel and crushed rock is main tained at both plants for immedi ate delivery. Ten modern dump-trucks with a capacity for transporting from 3 to 5 cubic yards each, are kept in operation at all times. From four to six trained men are employed at the plants in addtiion to those working with the drump trucks. This makes a total of approximat ely 24 neoole regularly employed and creates an annual payroll of around S113 thousand dollars. Loam Over-Burdtn For Lawns The gravel bars in the Umpqua river have an over-burden of river loam that ranges from four to six feet. This over-burden is com posed of river loam which has been washed-down, during the pro cess of land erosion, from all lo cations where water comes into the river. Being heavier than wat er this loam is deposited at the ob structions caused by the rock de posits. This loam over-burden, which have been made thousands and thousands of years ago, is sold by the Roseburg Sand & Gravel company for lawns, gardens and landscaping. Due to the fact that it must be removed before the rock deposits can be recovered, a very economical charge is made for this loam and deliveries will be made to any reasonable loca tion in the Roseburg trading ter ritory. Bar-run sand and gravel or rock, which is classed as reject, make ideal fill and grading under concrete slabs and for many other purposes. Mason sand, concrete sand and gravel, round rock for concrete in various specified sizes is the basic materials that are supplied by this industrial firm. Round rock comes in sizes 2 inch, 1V4 and H inch in diameter. Drain rock comes In sizes ranging from Vt to Va inch. For concrete-mix the sizes range from to Vt inch and for tile construction the sizes are from V to Vfcth. Crushed rock is supplied in six different sizes. It is not often that such a variety of sizes of (quality sand, gravel and crushed rock can be secured as the average s,and and gravel supplies does not take the time or give consideration to these in tricate sizes. Since its establishment the Rose burg Sand & Gravel company has been supplying contractors, build ers and individuals, with quality sand and gravel and other buy-products. It is one of the few sources of rock by-products, in this sec tion of Oregon, that has the quality to meet the rigid specifications set up by both the federal and state governments. Therefore, the majority of the sand and gravel used in the construction era, that Roseburg has been passing through the last five years, has come from this source. All of the concrete sand and gravel that is used by the Pre-Mix Concrete, Inc., is sup plied by the Roseburg Sand & Gravel company.- The Chrystalite Tile plant also gets its rock by products from this industrial firm. Generates Its Own Power In order to provide a stabilized voltage of electricity, which is es sential for the operation of the motors used to pull the machinery Roseburg Sand and Gravel com pany, located at Melrose and Wil bur, this electric power is gener ated by the company's own plant. Diesel engines ire used with large generators to provide this source of power which is ample to care for all power needs. While lha Roseburg Sand and Gravel company does some con tracting of excavation, land level ing, dirt moving and ditching this is, more or less, a side-line from the supplying of sand, gravel and crushed rock. However, the equip ment for doing this work includ ing "Cat-dozers," carry-all, drag lines and shovels, back-hoes, clam shells and other auxiliary equip ment is available to builders who would like to rent it on an hourly or time basis. Don Metzger grew up In the environment of building, sand and gravel and general construction work. He became identified with the Roseburg Sand and Gravel company in 1947. E. R. Metzger, the founder, has been active all of his business life in this field, and in order to go on a semi-retired basis has, virtually, turned the operation over to Don Metzger and associates. To further extend the scope of operation, the company was incorporated August 1, 19S2 with Don Metzber as president and general manager. Today, the Roseburg Sand & Gravel company can supply, in any quantity, the necessary and vital rock by-products for the con struction of any type of building. The same consideration is given the small orders placed by the individuals as are given to their major construction jobs done by contractors. Service is an impor tant factor in the operation of this industry. MERCY HOSPITAL HAS SERVED THE PEOPLE OF ROSEBURG AND DOUGLAS COUNTY SINCE 1909.
