Groves, past or of the First Methodist Church, speaking to the Roseburg Kiwanis Club Tuesday noon. Tracinsr the history of the church and its westward "movement from the time Abraham led his people 1000 miles westward to found the Hebrew nation 2000 years B.C., he stated the "record of our serv; ices is found, in our Christian civ ilization." He discussed the spread of the Christian Church westward through Europe and to America and thence to the West Coast, emphasizing the work of the cir cuit riders. He listed especially Francis Asburry and Robert A. Booth, the latters descendants be ing residents of Roseburg. He told of Jason Lee who came west in 1834 to help bring Christianity to the Indians and to early settlers. He challenged, "Can you and I measure, up t the needs of our hour, as those of the early days measured up to the needs of thir tims?" Better U.S. Leaders Needed Discussing Communism, a trend of the day, "More persons came under its influence in less time than any other ideology," he stat ed. "Moscow calls and our State Department answers." Stressing that there Is need for better leadership In Washington to meet this Communist threat, he added that that is not enough "We need greater citizens, true to the ideas of Democracy and the Christian faith," he stated. We need honesty . to ourselves, In our business, in our political system." The Rev. Mr, Groves then listed some of the things he said are important in making our country and our lives better. He listed service. The Marshall plan has done a lot for people abroad, he MISCELLANEOUS Fuller Brush Co. Ph. 3-3659 Oregon Sconie Notopopr. Artist, Amy Robinson. Missionaries, he said, have been called diplomats to nations of the world. It has been said that they can do with one dollar, what the government would require ten. We need character to give ,us an insight Into what is important, he added. Here the church is a must. He discussed the growing church needs in any growing com munity such as Roseburg. He quoted statistics showing that, Over the nation, 58 per cent of the people are associated with church es. In Oregon the figure is only 14 per cent. In Kansas state alone 11 per cent are Methodists, in ad dition to all other religions. - He said the crime rate is much greater in non-Church areas than in the more religious sections. The nation s records show one divorce for every three marriages, he pointed out. Last year in Douglas County there were 400 marriages and 250 divorces, he said. In con trast, among church goers, the ratio is only one divorce to every 53 marriages.
