Everything you've shown me looks just like a shoe! - Review, Roteburg, C.e. 5 By Jo Fischer By Merrill Bloster By V. T. Hamlin By Chic Young Foreign Policies Similar, But Who Can Handle Best? By JAMES MARLOW WASHINGTON W-Cut through the campaign oratory and exag geration and the views of Gen. Eisenhower and Gov. Stevenson come down to this: both go along with the basic foreign policy of the Truman administration. Which means: stopping commu nism from further aggression by building our armed force; holding, helping and arming allies because they need us and we need them; giving aid to other countries to keep them out of communism. Dlffertnce Is How The real difference between them, although it may some times get swept around a bend by the flood of words, is this: (a) how well has our foreign policy been carried out and (b) who could handlo it - better, Eisenhower or Slevenson? Stevenson, of course, Isn't em phasizing mistakes of the Truman administration. Eisenhower, o f course, is doing just that. He's hammering hard on the shortcom ings. He sometimes hammers so hard, in his zeal to get elected, that he may make it seem the Truman administration, not communism, is responsible for present world ten sions. For instance, in his Philadelphia speech last Thursday when he said the Truman administration has "bungled us perilously close to World War 111" and deplored in effectiveness in the United Nations. Ik Less Cartful Elsenhower has been less care ful than Stevenson in laying down his foreign policy views. Steven son, in fact, didn't devote a full speech to them until Tuesday night in San Francisco, shortly after Ei senhower spoke in Indiana. For instance, Eisenhower said we should tell Russia we'll "never rest" until the satellite countries are free. This might have sounded en couraging to minority groups who are in this country, have relatives behind the Iron Curtain, and didn't pause to ask: just how are we go ing to get them free without going to war? It was a statement which alarmed our allies. And Truman and Stevenson both took Eisenhow er to task for this kind of cam paigning. He explained later he means doing everything peacefully. Government 'Subterfuge' In Dam Building Charged COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho Wl Rep. John T. Wood attacked Fri day what he called the use of "subterfuge" by the federal gov ernment to build power dams. Existing laws, he said, do not give the government the right to build dams other than for irriga tion, flood control and navigation purposes. "There Is a definitely growing policy in the Department of Inter ior to controvert existing federal laws so that dams may be built at' the taxpayers' expense for the pri mary purpose of power produc tion," Wood said. Wood, who seeks to succeed him. self in Congress, said he believes taxpayers in other areas who do not benefit from the "so-called cheap power, have become aware of this cruel hoax." L Newbe.r,, Salesmaa Baby Is Born On Plane Trip From Hong Kong VANCOUVER. B. C. Wl Flight 306 came in from Hong Kong Sat urday with an extra passenger a Chinese baby born over the Pa cific ocean. The baby girl was carried in a wooden box a makeshift cradle from the big Canadian Pacific Air lnes plane. Her Chinese mother and father and 24 other passengers followed her into the immigration office. She was born at 9:00 a.m. Sept. 6, an hour before the plane crossed the international dateline, but the plane landed at Shemya airport in the Aleutians at 12:50 Sept. S. Born to Wong Yuk Tons, 21, wife of Chlnn Daniel Yuk Kai, 32, of Heppner, Ore., the log showed the baby's place of birth as: "Co ordinate 48 degrees north, 162 de grees east, at 9,000 feet, aboard C.P.A. Flight 306." The mother was taken to Van couver General Hospital. With her on the stretcher was another child, a year-old son, Chinn Bi Nui, who smiled happily. The mother seemed exhausted. The surprise arrival of the extra passenger provide a citizenship puzzle for immigration officers. The father and mother are United States citizens and an American officer claimed her as an American because she is the daughter of an "American citizen." He also admitted she might be a Canadian and British subject as she was born on a Canadian plane and he added: "But if you ask the Chinese gov. ernment, they'll say she is a Chi nese." Man's True Life Span Has Not Been Reached WASHINGTON Wl Man's true life span could be more than the oldest age yet attained by anyone on ine planet but wnat nils might be is yet to be determined, two Iowa researchers said Saturday. "As long as people continue to die from pathologic causes (diseas es,)" said Drs. R, Ginzbcrg and V. Olsary of the Mental Health Institute, Cherokee, Iowa, "the on ly correct answer to the question of life span is that it is yet to be determined." Addressing the annual meeting of the Gerontological Society, Inc., an organization devoted to the study of the nature and aspects of aging, the researchers said: "The upper limit of age prede termined for our species has quite apparently never been reached by a majority or even by a consid erable minority of individuals."
