Pielold, Mayor West German Pilots To Train In United States BONN, Germany im German pilots for the projected European Army will be trained in the United States and England, especially in handiin? the latest type jet fight ers, officials in the Federal De fense Commission said Friday. The British and Americans are also expected U) train the new German Army officers in the hand ling of new weapons. Concrete plans fur this train ing are to be worked out by offi cials of the six-nation European Defense Community (EDC) in Par is in the fall. The Germans will start recruit ing soldiers and fliers only after the federal parliament ratifies the EDC treaty for rearmament . Then they will call up for their new tactical airforre of about 1.500 planes, veterans of World War II and a few new candidates. They will be trained abroad be cause adequate flying schools do not exist here and the allied air bases in Germanv are already crowded, officials said. Reedsport Area Scene Of Three Traffic Mishaps Wet pavement was the cause of two head-on collisions on High way 101 near Heedsport within a short period Friday aflernoon, re sulting in the injury and hospitaliz tion of three persons, and dam age to four cars. A quarter mile south of the Douglas-Cons county line, a car driven by Adrian C. MlTherson of Coos Bay collided with one driven by Dixie I'ruite of San Krancisco. Both drivers sustained fractures and lacerations and were taken to Reiser Brothers' Hospital, North Bend, by the linger Ambulance Service and the Heedsport Fire Department emcrcency car. At the same time, two cars col lided on Highway 101 north of Reedsport at Tahkenitch, injuring Benjamin F. Isaac and his pas senger, Clifford Hunter, both of Florence, and G. C. Read of Wald port. Isaac sustained a fractured arm and lacerations; Hunter, lacera tions and fractured pelvis. The Un ger Funeral Home hearse was pressed into ambulance service for the accidents. Also Friday afternoon, a U. S. Bureau of Roads jeep driven by Gerald E. Rogers, bureau employ ee, went over a 55-foot bank 25 miles uo Smith River when the brakes failed. Rogers was slight ly injured. State, County and Reedsport city police co-operated in handling the three near-simultaneous accidents. Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Weston of Glen Ellen, Calif., were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Huntley, their son, Alfred, and daughter, Lorna, Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Weston and Mrs. Huntley attend ed the same high school together at Merced, Calif. It had been 13 years since Mrs. Huntley had seen them. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Jenkins Back From Extended Tour Of Midwest By MRS. ROSA HEINBACH Mr. and Mrs. Ross Jenkins and daughter, Mrs. Garnet Folmsbce, returned to the hills of OreRon after spending several weeks trav eling through the midwestern states, where they stated that the temperature was so high the har vesting was all done with para sols on the farming equipment. They left July 7, by way of Mc Kinsey Pass Highway, stopping to visit the Peterson's Rock Gardens near Bend, Ore. In Idaho, they were greatly impressed by Ihc beauty of the Thousand Springs. As they left Rock Spring, Wyo., they saw about thirty antelope in one herd. Among other points of interest enroute was "Little Amer ica," Wyo; at Como Bluff. Wyo., they were atlracted by a house constructed of Dinosaur's bones. In Hastings, Neb. they visited the "House of Yesterday," in which was displayed many stuffed ani mals and antiques. They comment ed on the extensive harvesting that was being done throughout the entire middlewest and were amused to see umbrellas on the toured the Morman Temple and harvesters which was a novelty to westerns. On their return trip, they visited the Capitol grounds and buildings at Salt Lake. On the tour they saw the Gold Room, where they commented the chairs and drapes were made of gold and silk. The lights hanging on the walls were decorated with sus pended drops which were called "tear drops," the laraest having the effect of amethysts and the smaller ones opals; around these were rows of mirrors. I A young woman doctor stabbed her 3-year-old daughter to death, wounded her two other children, and then sought to end her own life with poison early today. Detective Lt. J. R. Bowles said Dr. Norma Holt, 27-year-old pedia trician, stabbed her young daugh ter Vickie through the heart with a needle-sharp pair of scissors, kill ing her instantly. She then turned on Ann. 4, and jabbed the scissors into the child's breast. Next, said Bowles, the young mother inflicted a serious stomach wound upon her 11-month-old son Larry. Bowles said the mother, the wife of Dr. L. Beverly Holt, 33, an eye specialist, had recently heea undar the care of a psychiatirst. Camas Fire Truck Puts Out Blaze By JEAN Y0DER A grass fire across the road from the Guy Moores in Camas Valley was put out Wednesday bv the Camas Valley fire truck and volunteer fire fighters. F. Greenrock, senior, from Mineral Wells, Tex., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Lee Wilson. The designated speed for school areas is 10 miles an hour. Lansing also said parents should begin training first year school children in safe walking habits, such as obeying traffic sig nals or police officer direction, and staying on curbs until traffic is cleared at intersections. "Unfortunately," he said, "acci dent prevention campaigns seem to have little appeal to the public as no one gets excited about acci dents until some child or a mem ber of their family is killed or seriously injured in one." Serious consideration of the safe ty problem, and individual efforts on the part of parents nnd motor ists could eliminate many hazards to school children each fall, Lan sing said. Last year, 10 children of school age were listed as pedestrian fa talities in Oregon. Alcoa Planning Huge Smelter Plant In Alaska MT. MCKINLEY NATIOMAL PARK, Alaska on Aluminum company of America said Saturday it will build a 400-millinn dollar aluminum smelting plant in Alaska. The company said the project hinges on the purchase of land and government approval. Leon E. Hickman, vice president and general counsel for ALCOA, said the plant initially will be cap able of producing 200,000 tons of aluminum annually. Hickman said the plat will be built in the Taiya Valley district, near Skagway. It will bo financed entirely with private capital. He estimated the Taiya develop ment will require about four years to complete and will eventually of fer employment for approximately 4,000 workers. Hickman pointed ouf that Alcoa will need to acquire approximate ly 20.000 acres of land in the Taiya district to accommodate the pro posed works and facilities, includ ing a town site. He said that there Is no way for tie company to acquire this amount of land under present laws affecting Alaska. Schneider said Sat urday. He Said game agents had found four dead does and another one crippled since the opening of the buck antelope season in Area 1, including Klamath and Lake Coun ties. Since buck antelope seasons opened on a limited basis in 1945, doe and herd shooting has increas ed. Schneider said. Last year the Game Commission banned all shooting within 50 yards of a car or plane in an effort to do away with hazing and herd shooting. Herd shooting consists of driving a speeding car along a herd and firing into it in the hope of hitting a buck. Two game agents arrested two hunters, using a single tag, after watching them shoot a doe within a few feet of their car. The hunt ers were fined in Lakeview justice court. Schneider said. 'Folks who want shooting gal lery conditions best not apply for the antelope hunts," Schneider said. Turkey Dealers Lose On Water Filled Turkeys WASHINGTON W A Food and Drug Administration official told Saturday about the break-up of a scheme by which he said frozen turkeys were "pumped up" with water and retail dealers lost money when the birds thawed and the water ran out. Consumers didn't lose much mon ey, he said, because they generally bought the turkeys after the thaw and run-off. But flavor and other qualities of the meat drained out with the water, he said. The officials, asking not to be quoted by name, said about 50,000 pounds of the turkeys, injected with an average of a quart of water each, were shipped by two Chicago firms to Cincinnati and Cleveland.
