What happens if one of the presidential or vice presidential candidates dies before election day next November? Chance (or an accident may he greater this year. The candidates are going tn campaign by plane as well as train. A fatal accident to one of them would leave his party without a nominee unless a successor could be picked before election day. Democrats and Republicans have been thinking of this for years, and doing something about it. Be fore each campaign they make ar rangements to protect themselves, just in case. The two parties' plans for such an event are similar but not iden tical. The Democrats While the delegates to the Demo cratic National Convention every four years name (he party's two candidates, just before closing they take out insurance by voting to continue a rule adopted long ago. The rule says that if either of the candidates dies before election day the Democratic National Com mittee will pick some one in his place. This committee 106 men and women from the slates and territories runs the party be tween conventions. The Republican System The Republicans The Republican convention dele gates, after making their presi dential and vice presidential choices every four years, vote to have a replacement made this way if death overtakes one of tneir candidates: 1. Their Republican National Committee can do it. It has 138; men and women members from the slates and territories. 2. Or, this committee can call another national convention, If it wants to and if there is time to do so before election day. The committee members, mosti of all of them, would probably want instructions from their states or territories on how to vote. This might cause a bit of a mess. Neither party has made provi sion for instruction of committee members by their state organiza tions. They'd have to work this out bv themselves. 1912 Death Recalled In 1912 James Sherman, vice presidential candidate on the Re publican ticket headed by Presi dent Taft, died on Saturday be fore election day. Doug las for president and Benjamin Fitpatrick for vice president. Kitzpatrick declined the nomina tion. The Independents National Committee then named Herschel V. Johnson as vice presidential : candidate. That was the year thei other half of the party, calling it-! self just the Democrats, picked J. C, Breckenbridge for president and Joseph Lane vice president. It was also the year the Repub licans won with Abraham Lincoln. Sleeping Sickness Takes 30 Lives In California SAN FRANCISCO I - Thirty Californiajis have died this year of encephalitis, the State Depart ment of Health announced Thurs day. Twelve of the deaths were with in the past week. It's the worst outbreak of sleep ing sickness in the state's history. A total of 499 cases has been re ported since June 1, including 81 last week and 18 this week. The department said the disease was slowly creeping north, most ly in the interior valleys.
