Politburo's End
Branded Phony
WASHINGTON Wl American
diplomati laid Wednesday that
Russia's move to abolish the Polit
buro is aimed at fooling outsid
ers as well as Kussian citizens
into believing the Communist party
setup is being democratized.
Exnerta familiar with Soviet af
fairs viewed the call for a Com
munist party congress the first
in 13 years and the announcement
of a new five-year production plan
is a combination of propaganda
and Communist party necessity.
The word "Politburo, these of
ficials noted, has become a byword
for dictatorship even outside Russia.
fhese diplomats said, too, that
the Moscow announcement shows
that Georgi Malenkov ranks as a
likely successor to Joseph Stalin
as the Russian premier. ,
They pointed to the fact that
Malenkov, 50-year-old Politburo
member, has been selected to read
the main report and said this
shows he is firmly entrenched in
the Communist hierarchy.
Stalin gave this report personally
at the two previous Communist
party congress gatherings in 1934
and 1939.

. , . gas rates are coming down!
LATEST RATE CUT WILL SAVE OREGON CUSTOMERS $86,100 ANNUALLY
In contrast to the usual news of higher prices, your Utility Service Company is
pleased to announce another gas rate reduction of 10.1, which becomes effective
after August 15th. Bills you will receive about September 1st will be the last billing
t the old rate. This ii the third cut in rate since the substantial rise in the cost
of the fuel from which gas is made first caused gas rates to increase in July 1948.
New equipment with better operating efficiencies, recent lower fuel costs, and
your greater use of our service are largely responsible for the lower rates, in spite
of numerous increases in other items of expense. The new rates will w.pe out most
of th. overall increase in gas rates which began in July 1948. Your gas rates w.ll
now be only 9.5 above the rates in use before inflation also hit our business.
Take advantage of the lower cost of this modern fuel in times Ii' e these . . .
.nd remember-1- "S". lower the unit cost.
