Regional Game Supervisor Jim Vaughn of Roseburg describes Steamboat Creek, tributary to the North Umpqua River, as a ma jor spawning stream for steel head. Steamboat Falls, located six miles above the mouth of the creek, bars fish passage to scores of tributary streams in all but high water stages. Fish passage facilities at South Umpqua Falls on the South Ump qua River would assist spring Chinook salmon which" concen trate below the falls. Both falls were recently inspect ed by representatives of the game commission and U. S. fish and wildlife service and Game Com mission. Engineer George Kernan is now conducting tbe survey work. If approved by the game com mission, the fish passage facili-, ties would be bunt with leaerai aid funds derived from the fish ing tackle excise tax.
