MARSH Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Marsh re turned Wednesday from a two week trip which included attend ance at the quarterly meeting of the board of trustees of the Chil dren's Farm Home in Corvallis and a meeting of the Republican State Central Committee in Port land. They also took a tour of Wash ington, with visits at Paradise Valley and Yakima State Park, Grand Coulee Dam, Chief Joseph Dam, Odell Lake, and a boat trip up Lake Chelan. They report having narrowly escaped the se vere wind storm which lashed Prineville and the John Day val ley the day before they reached there. Visit From Idaho Ethel Conn and daughter, Doris, of Hayden Lake, Idaho, accom panied by Sue Ann Starr small daughter of Mrs.. Conn's daugh ter, Virginia Starr, were visitors the past week at the home of Mrs. Conn's mother, Mrs. I. B. Howard, and brother, Charles Howard. Their visit was inter rupted by word from Hayden Lake of the serious illness of Mrs. Starr who was thought to have suffered an attack of polio. The group left Tuesday to return home. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Williams, Winifred and Jimmie spent their vacation recently in Los Angeles. After stopping briefly at Looking glass, they were joined by Lois Swift and proceeded on to Port land where Winifred resumed her work as student nurse at Eman uel Hospital. The remainder of the party returned to tne vaney via the coast route. Mr. and Mrs. George Marsh and children, Judy, Bill and Dan, spent a week the latter part of July visiting with Mrs. Marsh's step father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Dowd, at Athena. See Redwoods Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Swift,. Lois, Kenneth, David and Larry visit ed . the northern California red wood area and Crescent City over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Joe McMinn and children, Billy and Shirley, return ed Tuesday from a trip to Idaho. They have recently taken resi dence in the C. E. Ainsworth home. The sympathy of the valley Is being extended to Mrs. Homer Elliott in the passing of her fath er, for whom services were held in Molalla recently. Mr. Elliott entered the hospital in Salem three weeks ago for medical treat ment. Mrs. Oscar Maicr (Margaret Rogers) of Long Beach, Calif., who came north for a month's visit at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. G. Rogers, was stricken with a severe attack of asthma which developed into pneumonia. She has been receiving treat ment at Mercy Hospital and has now been taken to the home of her sister, Virginia Owens, where she is reported to be convalesoing satisfactorily. Mrs. Flora Lowden and Donnle attended a family reunion over the weekend in Ashland City Park. The affair was planned in honor of Mrs. Lowden's mother Mrs. Nettie Peery and included all of the family living in the state. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Capp and Linda are now making their home in the Ivan Matthews home. The Matthews moved into the new home recently vacated by Mr. and Mrs. Dale Matthews and fam ily when they went to Fairbanks, Alaska. , Mrs. Arthur Marsh was sum moned to Eugene on Wednesday to serve on jury duty in the U.S. District Court. DIAL 2-2611 Directory Record Timber Deal In Indian Lands Announced EVERETT 1 The first $456.. 147 payment on one of the biggest deals ever entered by Pacific Northwest Indians was announced Friday. It is a $6,473,900 sale of 614 mil lion board feet of timber on the Quinault Indian Reservation on the Olympic Peninsula. Raymond H. Bitney, superintendent of the West ern Washington Indian Agency, an. nounccd the first payment by Ray onier Inc. Rayonier, the only bidder at a public auction June 17, has agreed the 35,000-acre tract will be logged on a sustained yield basis over a 35-year period. Acting Supt. John M. Helmer called it "the largest timber sale ever made by the Indian depart ment." The Impact of the payments were expected to be Important to tribs in Western Washington. The money will be available for ex penditure for the Indians. A nunv ber of older Indians will be re moved from relief roles as a re sult of the income.
