The twenty-third annual picnic of the Grand Court, Order of the Amaranth, state of Oregon will be held Sunday, Aug. 10. Jn order to centralize the location this an nual affair will be held at Island Park, two miles east of Canby, Ore. Lunch is scheduled for 12 noun at which time coffee, ice cream and soda pop will be furnished. Games and races will begin at 2 p.m. It is anticipated that members of the Order will attend coming from Astoria, Seaside, Cannon Beach, Newport, Bend, Klamath Fills, Medford, Roseburg, Eugene, Sa lem, Oregon City, Milwaukio. Mc Minn ville, Forest Grove, llillsboro, Grcsham, 1'arkrose, 1'ortland and Vancouver, Wash. Mrs. Nadene Janes, Portland, grand associate matron, and Don ald Patton, Salem, grand associate patron are co-chairmen of arrangc irtents: They are assisted by the as sociate matrons and patrons of the sub-ordinate Courts. SQUARE DANCE CLUB HAS MEETING SATURDAY EVENING The "Wagon Wheel's" 'square dance club met last Saturday at the Roy Lucas home west of Su thcrlin for an enjoyable evening of souare dancing. A large crowd was in attend ance and two squares were ioing at all times. Several dances were practiced for the contest that will be held at the Timber Days celebration at the Community Hall, Saturday evening, Aug. 9, and another practice will be held before that time, with the members meeting at the Ed llounchell home. At midnight a potluck supper was enjoyed. TILLAMOOK PICNIC TO BE HELD SUNDAY AT DALLAS, ORE. ELGAROSC COMFORT (jfr CLUB HOLDS ANNUAL PICNIC ON SUNDAY The Elgarose Comfort Club held its annual picnic Sunday at Ump qua Park. A potluck dinner and ice-cream bars were enjoyed, aft er which a large number went swimming. PINE GROVE PIONEER PICNIC AND HOMECOMING DATED FOR SUNDAY The Pine Grove Sunday School homecoming and pioneer picnic affair will be held at the Pine Grove Sunday School grounds Sunday. Aug. 10, at 12 p.m. Stan dard Time. A guest speaker and program will be presented at 2 p.m. Standard Time. Those attending are asked to bring a picnic dinner and their table service. Coffee and punch will he furnished by the Sunday School. All persons interested are invited. EVERGREEN GRANGE TO MEET AT UMPQUA PARK The Evergreen Grange will meet at Umpqua Park Friday, August 8 at 6 p.m. standard time for a potluck supper. Members are to assist in the decoration of the booth for the County Fair. New Mill Starts Cutting At Tiller By ALICE LERWILL The Scott Lumber Co. sawmill, located on the South Umpqua Riv er three miles east of Tiller, ha started operations. It is an all-electric mill, with a cutting capacity of 30,000 board feet. Operator started a night shift on Monday. Tiller Boy Scouts, under the leadership of Lance Brown en joyed an overnight camping trip at Camp Comfort Friday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Teena Smith and family of Roseburg visited at the Weston Scott home Monday even ing. . Mrs. R. Rockwell and daughter spent' the week at their residence in Roseburg. Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Williams and family moved Sunday to their recently purchased acreage on the Graves property. At noon Tuesday the employes and families of the Issac Ger vais Logging Co. held a picnic near the scene of the company's operations on Jackson Creek. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Stevens and son of Cucamonga, Calif., were renewing old acquaintances in Tiller Sunday. Mr. Stevens liv ed in Tiller 37 yean ago. Local News i Personnel In Australian Communist Party Drops CANBERRA, Australia w? The Australian government claims membership of the Australian Communist Party today is about half what it was in 1949. In 1949 Communist Party membership was believed to be about 12,000. Labor Minister Harold Holt says the Liberal-Country Party govern ment had made a well planned penetration of Communist ranks since it gained power in- 1949. Communists have lost control of some trade unions since the government introduced secret bal lots, supervised by Arbitration Court, for positions as union ex ecutives. ' WIENER ROAST AND SWIMMING PARTY TO BE HELD AUG. 11th The Youth Group of the Camas Valley Church will hold a swim ming party and wiener roast Aug. 11. at Slater Bottom. The group will meet at the church at 3:30 in the afternoon. - Mrs. Juan Schwendener, group advisor, will accompany them. MULTNOMAH GROUP HAS MEETING ON MONAY The Multnomah Camp Fire aroup held a meeting at the Forks of the River Monday. Plans were made for a baked food sale to be held Saturday, Aug. 9.
