Local Nevs Visitors Ltiv. Mr. and Mn. Joseph Matton and Mr. and Mm. Ernest Smith of Shrewsbury, Mass., have left, following a visit in Roseburg with Mrs. Matton's brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. W. K. Amiot. En route south, they will stop in Fresno, Calif., for a visit with Mrs. Matton's niece, Mrs, James Lorigan, nee Meta-Marie Amiot, and her family. The easterners have been on an extended vacation trip. They visit ed Glacier National Park, Lake Louise and Banff, Canada, and will go through the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park en route back to their homes. Visiters Leave Mrs. W. M. Campbell Jr., and son, W, M. Campbell III, have left for their home in Peoria, 111., following a visit in Roseburg with the latter's paternal . grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Before coming to Roseburg, she and Billy stopped in Sacramento, Calif., for a visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Miller, former residents of this city. Visit At Rathkey Heme Mrs. Marie Gerty of Cottage Grove vis ited over the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Minnie Rathkey, at Tenmile. Another visitor was Ed ward Hartle of Oakland, Ore., who was a neighbor of the Rathkey family more than 30 years ago near Elkton. During the afternoon Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Chris 01 sen of Springfield slopped to visit the latter's grandmother, Mrs. Rathkey, and her mother, Mrs. Gerty. Mrs. Olsen was formerly Meribeth Gerty, who attended schools in Roseburg and Oakland and is now a school teacher at Pleasant Hill, near Eugene. At Carter Heme Yeoman S-C Tommy Carter has arrived here by plane to enjoy a month's leave visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Carter, and with his broth er, Bruce Carter, and family. He has been in Cuban waters doing Navy war games. He will report back to Newport, R. I., following his leave, after which he will go to Honolulu, Japan and then will be in Mediterranean waters. He has been in the Navy the last two years. While in the Mediteranean area, he expects to be able to spend his leave in Germany visit ing his sister, Mrs. Terrence Fitz gerald, nee Thelma Carter, who is making her home there and where, her husband is stationed with the U.S. Forces. The Fiti geralds have two children. - ft 14 f tfOt tjff Elks To Picnic At Wolf Creek Grounds Sunday Aug. 10 has been set aside for thef athering of Elks, their ladies, wives and children for an all-day picnic to be held at the Wolf Creei Ranger picnic grounds. The grounds are 30 miles from Roseburg on the Little River Road. Directions are to go up the North Umpqua Highway to the turnoff, just west of Glide and proceed up the Little River Road. Directional signs will be posted to assist in locating the grounds. Transporta tion will be available from the temple Sunday morning for those Having no other means. Those attending are to prepare their own food for the day's outing, ana tnose desiring to cook out of doors will have plenty available space at the grounds' fire places and kitchens. The Elks will serve beverages, ice cream and cc.'fee. It is announced that, while events planned for the day are more for the children, the officials have also planned a lot of fun for adults as well. The children's games and races will be divided into height groups and sexes for keener competition and fair basis of competing, states the commit tee. All Elks are urged to attend with their families. Especially invited are new members. Elks are ad vised to have their membership cards with them to be presented for admission to the grounds. McCords Return To Dillard Home After Chicago Tour Mrs. Clarke Home Mrs. Olive Clarke has returned to her home in Roseburg, following an extend ed trip. She visited in Oakville, Canada, with relatives of her late husband, W. J. Clarke, and then went to Detroit, Mich., to visit her daughter, Mrs. W. 0. Bimz and son, Dale McCauley, for three weeks. At Minden, Iowa, she visited her daughter, Mrs. Elmer Dollen, after which she went to Cheyenne, Wyo., to visit her broth er and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Hough, and with Mr. and Mrs. William Whitaker. Mr. Whitaker is a nephew of the late Mr. Clarke. Go To Funeral Mr. and Mrs. G. V. Wimberly, Miss Bess and Miss Jane Wharton, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Wharton and daughter, Mrs. Florence Wickland; Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Wharton, Mr. and Mrs. George Wharton, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Catching, Mr. and Mrs. Ken neth Quine and Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Quine, all of Roseburg, drove to Grants Pass Tuesday to attend the funeral of JoseDh Whar ton, who died suddenly Sunday. He was a brother of Mrs. Wimber ly, Bess, Jane, J. R., Charles and George Wharton. Mrs. Catching and H. D. and Kenneth Quine re the niece and nephews of Mrs. Joseph Wharton. By ROSA HEINBACH Mrs. Charles McCord and sons, David and Peter, returned to their home in Dillard last Thursday fol lowing a seven-week vacation trip in and around Chicago. They visited her relatives and friends in her former home of Highland Park, 111. While there. Mrs. McCord and boys visited the Chicago Museum of Science, Field Museum of Natural History, Shedd Aquarium and Brookfield Zoo. They attended the races at Ar lington Park and Mrs. McCord at tended several plays given in tent theaters. These theaters are similar to a one-ring circus in that the action of the play takes place on a cen tral stage with the audience sit ting in a circle around it. The act ors and actresses make their en trances and exits down the aisles. There are several of these theat ers around Chicago. Mrs. McCord also heard the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Dmitri Mitropolos. '-. McCord nurchased a small truck while in Highland Park and ". o Dillard. Enroute she and the boys visited relatives a tasuoi', wyo. They toured Yel lowstone National Park, the Grand Tetons, and Jackson Hole. In Big Piney, Wyo.. they were overnight guests of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bird and children of Winston, who are spending the summer there. Undergoes Appendectomy Oma Day, 15-year-old daughter or Air. ana Mrs. w. u. jaymeson of Robert's Creek was released from the Mercy Hospital last Sun day following an emergency ap pendectomy. The Jameyson's were formerly residents of South Dil lard. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Colvin and children, Opal and John, of River side, Calif., have been visiting at the home of the former's brother, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Colvan and daughters, Mary and Georgia, and their mother Mrs. Mary Umbar ger In Dillard. For several days last week Mrs. Mary Umbarger, in company with Mr. and Mrs. Bert Colvin, visited in Bend with Mrs. Martha Elder, mother of Mrs. Umbarger. Rosemary Wight and her chil dren. Eloisa and Gregory, have gone to Alberquerque, N. Mex. to visit her father. She is now super vising a playground school and at tending a secretarial school. She was formerly a teacher in 'the Dillard School. Juanita Drake and daughters, Jen, Diane and Valoise, have been visiting her mother and sisters, in Las Vegas, N. Mex., and Okla homa. Mr. and Mrs. Willard Laurance and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Laurance and children Pamela and Nickie made a trip up the coast on Mon day, stopping overnight at New port. Later they dr. ve on to Port land, where they att tided to busi ness and pleasure. McFarlands Move Mr. and Mrs. Ed McF, rland and children, Beth, John, Sue and Da vid, have moved into the old family home of Mrs. Mercy Buell. Mc Farland is in rodeo activities with L. R. Andrus. Leonard Pearson, five-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Cal Pearson of Dillard. underwent a tonsillect omy on Thursday at the Winston Fish Barge Becomes Half Pirate Vessel t SAN PEDRO. Calif, (if) A former fish barge has had a recent face-lilting it's now hall a pirate ship. The barge was remodeled by Vin Taylor, set dresser, and D. Steele, lighting technician, for use in marine films. Fishermen who have delivered catches of albacore to the barge wouldn't recognize the vessel, Tay lor said. Its freezer house is now a replica of a ship's bridge, com plete with wheel, mast, shrouds and ratlines. Emergency Hospital, attended by Dr. Frederick Bracken. Mrs. G. T. Royer, who under went a serious major operation on Tuesday at Mercy Hospital, is re ported to be recovering satisfact orily. Her daughters, Mrs. Doug las Bridge of Lowell, Mrs. Herbert Eastman of Eugene and Mrs. Fred Albertus. have been with her con stantly. Mr. and Mrs. William C. Hem bach Sr. and son, Warren, went to Grants Pass Wednesday to visit tneir son ana tamuy, Mr. and Mrs, William C. Heinbach Jr. and Rog er Dean and Mary Helen. This was Mrs. Heinbach's first outing since she was hospitalized with a fractured ankle. Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Ore. 3 British Food Expert, Wife, Daughter Slain LURS, France, UK Police said Sir Jack Drummond, British food expert, his wife and 11-year-old daughter were murdered early Tuesday. The three were on a camping expedition in Southern France. Police said Sir Jack and his wife were fatally shot, apparently by bandits, and the daughter, Elizabeth, was clubbed to death. Sir Jack, knighted In 1944, was scientific adviser to the Ministry of Food during World War II and worked out a balanced diet of available foods with the highest nutritive value.
