Just six dayi ago, the Dodgers and Yankees were looking back at the other clubs and laughing their way to a pennant. Now things have gone sour and worried frowns have replaced the happy smiles. The Yankees' American League lead of five games over Boston and 7 n over Cleveland has dwindled to three over the now-second place Indians and 3 V4 over the Red Sox. 2. The Dodgers' 7 H-game bulge over the New York Giants has been sliced to only four. Even the third-place Cardinals, 13 games out and apparently out of the race, now trail by only nine and a half. Gerry Staley applied the final crusher to the Dodgers Monday night, hurling a four-hitter and losing a shutout in the ninth when two St. Louis errors gave the Dodgers a pair of unearned runs. in tne only otner scnedulea game, the St. Louis Browns upset the Washington Senators, 6-3, as Satchel Paige celebrated a "night" in his honor by pitching his seventh Bobby Young highlighted a four triumph. She led a squad of eight Rose burg archers. She also won third place in the broadhead field round with 32 hits out of 100. The only other local winner was Myrtle Eb- erhard. who took a reverse ap proach to win a set of arrows in the deer snoot, rne arrows were awarded as the booby prize. Other Roseburg members par ticipating in the shoot were: Larry Digby, Hank and Martha Ford, Kenneth Eberhard, Floyd Ward and Dorothy Ballou. They partici pated in a field of approximately 200 archers. Climaxing the shoot was the farewell flight in which each arch er looses an arrow with his name and address on it. The finder keeps the arrow and corresponds with the shooter. Members of the Umpqua Bow men are also expecting to partici pate in the Aug. 9 and 10 Jabber walkie Club shoot at Salem. Coos Bay-North Bend moved to within four games of the pace-setting Drain Black Sox this week end by snaring both ends of two game home series from hapless Brookings. The Lumberjacks had to come from behind to win the first game, 6-5, on a photo-finish ninth inning rally. But the effort apparently sapped everything from the Bea vers, because the Lumberjacks blasted them with a hopeless 24-5 slaughter in the second tilt. Meanwhile, the Roseburg Chief Shaughnessy playoff hopes grew dimmer at Bandon as the Millers also swept their series with a pair of pitiless wins, 12-3, and, 19-8. - At Medford, the Studs kept a firm grip on fourth-place in the League by nailing Coquille, 7-2, ana, -. The Lumberjacks used every trick in their tight Saturday night win. Brookings had grouped five runs in the fifth and sixth inn ings. The score stood at 5 3 going into the last of the ninth. The 'Jacks cut the lead to one run and Buzi Arlitt put the tying run on base with a triple. Dick Wen ner drove him across with a hit and later scored on Ward .Rock- ey's single. Rockey came in to relieve Con White in the sixth. Al Treichel could have Ditched from an easy chair in winning the second tilt. He gave up 14 hits for his fourth League victory with out , a loss. But his teammates blasted four Brookings Ditchers off the mound with 28 hits. The game oecame a mocxery in tne third inning when IS men came to bat. Eleven of them scored runs. In that fatal third, there were 10 hits and 3 errors. Roseburg also ran Into trouble with big opposition innings. In the first game, Bandon exploded with seven runs in the fifui inning. In the Sunday game, it was the sec ond when the Millers blasted out eight runs. The Chiefs were handicapped by a high wind which affected both hitting and pitching. In spite of the wind, however, they collected seven hits off Bill Han auska and 12 off Bailey Brem. Despite his youth, Sutherlin's high school catcher, Nub Beamer, showed signs of becoming a def inite hitting assst. He banged out a aouoie ana single in the Sun day game. Paul Gehrman wrapped un both wins against Coquille at Medford. He won tne Saturday night game with a two-inning relief job and then went the route in beating Aldon Wilkie in the Sunday affair. The Roseburg speedster took third in the fourth heat and then won the final heat. He finished fifth in the semi-final event in which only 11 of the 14 starters crossed the finish line. In the grueling main evant, his car didn't finish. It was one of 11 which dropped out of the 20 car race.
