MARTIN CHICAGO I Democrats were nut after the 19.12 farm vote Thurs day with an offer of a broadened program protecting agricultural prices against declines. Price supports or floors, now propping the basic crops of corn, wheat, cotton, rice, tobacco and peanuts, would be extended to fierishable commodities, such as ivestock, dairy and poultry prod ucts. A farm plank adopted by the party's national convention aban doned a flexible price support pro gram at least through 1954 endorsed in the Democratic plat form four years ago. Instead It applauded recent ac tion of Congress in boosting sup ports to a higher level than other wise might have prevailed during the next two years. That ' Congressional action re quires the government to support firices of the basic crops at not ess than 90 percent of parity until 1955. Parity is a standard for measur ing farm prices, declared by law to be equally fair to farmers and those who buy their products. The Republican convention two weeks ago adopted a farm plank that promised price supports at "whatever level is necessary" to maintain balanced production. This has been interpreted by some farm leaders as an endorse ment of the flexible svstem drooped for the time being by the Demo crats. Under the flexible system, price supports could range between 75 and 90 per cent of parity. Criticised By Truman .President Truman's administra tion has criticised this system, contending it offers farmers the least protection when they might need it most. The Republican plank said, how ever, that it would aim at full parity farm prices at the market place. But it did not say how it would seek to achieve such a goal. The Democrats did not mention by name a controversial farm plan advanced by Secretary of Agricul ture Brannan in 1949. But some of its major objectives were, in effect, endorsed. The Brannan plan called for high, rigid supports and for extension of price aid lo perish able crops through use of govern ment subsidies. The new plank made no mention of subsidies. It merely stated the party would seek "practical meth ods" for supporting the perishables, DIAL 3-5521 Frl., July 25, 19S2 The which it said account for three-1 fourths of all farm income. The platform pledged retention of controls to eurb farm output when surpluses develop. Republi-1 cans asserted these programs pose a threatened "regimentation of farmers.
