He said he could not endorse either GenDwight D. Eisenhower, the Republican nominee, or the GOP platform. Murray did not say so but left the impression that the CIO will be in the Democratic column in November, , He intimated that how hard the labor organization works for the Democratic ticket will depend a great deal on the convention's choice of candidates and platform pledges, Murray was asked by newsmen after he held a closed conference with CIO officers whether he felt the Democrats would win the presi dential election. Putnam ' con cur now with his position that the steel industry Is entitled to a price boost of $2.84 under the Capehart amendment and no more. Steelman and Putnam were re ported over the weekend to have told steel officials they could get a price increase of $5.65 a ton if that meant the strike could be settled promptly. Pointing ud what on the surface, at least, appears to be a conflict on the price issue among the ad ministration's economic planners, Arnall asserted: "As far as I'm concerned, this restatement of the position of the Office of Price Stabilization re verses the offer of a price increase averaging $5.65 per ton, if you can say that any such formal ofter , was made." i Easier Marches Advised For New Foot Soldiers ' By FRANK CAREY AP Science Reporter WASHINGTON (fl An Army doctor Friday recommended easier marches for young , soldiers in training to help save their feet from injury. . I.t. Col. Francis D. Threadgill of the Army's Fort Ord, Calif., hos pital reported evidence that long road marches given before proper conditioning of new men helped cause "march fracture" a frac ture of certain bones of the fore foot. Although commonest among sol diers, it is sometimes seen in wait resses, postmen and others who walk a great deal, the colonel said Asserting that in actual combat the footsoldier is seldom called upon to do long-lasting marching without let-up, Threadgill said, "it would appear unwise to cause march fractures by creating condi tions which will not be met in the field." The colonel also took a whack at "speed" marching, and said, more over, that road marches should never be made on paved roads. Another triggering cause of march fracture, he sai, is "the presently current game of "chick en fighting' in which two soldiers engage in the sadistic attempt to jump on their opponent's feet," Note to GI's: The colonel's re marks were carried in the U.S. Armed Forces Medical Journal, which says in its masthead that "the opinions expressed in this pub lication are not necessarily those of the Army, Navy, Air Force or Department of Defense." : RUNAWAY COMEDY!
