By Y. T. Hamlin Oldtimers Who Snarled Taft's Convention Plans Tabbed Bunch Of Amateurs By JAMES MARLOW WASHINGTON ( "Just a bunch of amateurs." That was the appraisal of Senator Taft's braintrusters given with a grin by one of the men most responsible for General Eisenhower's victory. . . Pro or amateur, Taft's advisors were mostly political oldtimers. Maybe that was their trouble. They used the oldtime approach: Bull your way through. When that failed all they had left was the primitive tactic of personal attack. They used that on Gov. Dewey but it didn't work then, either. Perhaps nothms would have worked. ! Perhaps Eisenhower's nomination was cinched before the convention started. At anv rate. Taft's righthand men are blaming one another now for what hap- penea in inicago. By sheer force, because thev con trolled the convention machinery, they rolled over Eisenhower before the convention started by loading the speakers' list with pro - Taft people. When Taft Shipped but. looking back, it's main now that Taft began losing ground when his Southern followers got into a wrangle with the Eisenhower peo ple over delegates. It handed the Eisenhower staff something they badly needed, an lsvie. tney worked it for all it was worth. They called it a moral issue. They cried "theft and cor- rupUon." School TV Use Needs Planning, Says Dr. Strand OREGON STATE COLLEGE Because television may affect the U.S. more than any other inven tion in history, it Is imperative that educatiors and others do some very careful planning to see that this new medium of information is used to greaVst advantage, ac cording to President A. L. Strand of Oregon State College. Writing in the latest Issue of the OSC alumni magaiine, President Strand says that while the post to the state would be considerable I "it seems almost unthinkable" that scientific and technical in stitutions like' OSC which are charged with statewide education al responsibilities will not use tele vision. In Oregon, three of the best "very high frequency" channels have been reserved for education. These include channel 7 in Cor vallis; channel S, Eugene; and channel 10, Portland. Employes Upped WASHINGTON ( President Truman signed a bill Wednesday ooosting tne pensions of retired federal employes up to a maxi mum $324 a year. The higher benefit pavments would go to civil service employes who retired prior to last April 1 and would amount to $36 for each six months they have been on the channels must come from state educational agencies for the most part berore June 1, 1953.
