Fields, Roseburg, returned Saturday from a week s vacation in California and Nevada. Miss Fields is assistant registrar at the Veterans Hospital here. Spends W.tk.nd At Saltm Mr. and Mrs. Robert Aufderheide and daughter, Roberta, Roseburg, spent last weekend in Salem, where they attended the 25th wedding anniversary celebration of Mrs. Aufderheide's brother-in-law and ' lister, Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Garrett. Meeting Dito Changod The Garden Valley Woman's Club has changed its meeting date from Thursday, July 17, to the following week, July 24, at 2 p.m., at the cluDhouse. Washington Visitors Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kirk of Longview, ' Wash., are visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Shaw in ' Roseburg. Mrs. Kirk is a niece of Mr. Shaw. R.portid Improving Alan H. , Tyson, who has been a medical patient at Douglas Community Hos pital for several weeks, is reported improving. Mr. Tyson is the father - of Rev. Alfred S. Tyson, of St. George's Episcopal Church in Roseburg. Stephen Foster, creator of such American folk songs as "My Old Kentucky Home" and "Old Folks at Home", was born on the same day that both Presidents John Ad ams and Thomas Jefferson died July 4, 1826. Yale Tree Expert Compiles Report On Fir Disease An expert on tree diseases, Dr. J. S. Boyce of Yale University, has come to the Oregon Forest Prod ucts Laboratory this summer to collect and edit four yean of re search reports on fomes pirn, a devastating tree-decaying fungus. This fungus has gained wide in roads into Oregon's Douglas fir forests. According to preliminary reports, Fomes nini was found in 5 to SO per cent of nearly 200 Doug las fir trees located in 14 research stands. A professor of forest pathology, Dr. Boyce's purpose in compiling this new Information is two-fold. Tabulation and interpretation of all the research on this problem since 1948 will present more ac curate ways to estimate the amount of decay In a particular group of trees. More exacting estimates will re sult in better timber utilization and make for less financial risk to lumber operators. It will also show the relation of Internal decay to a stand of timber so it can be determined what ages and on what locations the timber should oe cut to reduce losses. Older stands are more apt to carry this fungus. Dr. Boyce said. Spores of this fungus are car ried by wind and usually gain en try into a tree through the stubs of once-existing lower branches. The spores travel to the heart- wood, causing decay up and down the inner tree trunk. Conks, external tell-tale, black ish upper-surfaced knobs of from 2 to 10 inches broad, which appear in later development, make it pos sible to estimate the average lung us damage of a particular stand of trees. Fomes pint research was a co operative project of several state, federal and private agencies, in cluding the Oregon Forest Prod ucts Laboratory and the Oregon State College School of Forestry. Bruce Wagg, research division of the State Board of Forestry, has directed the fungus project since 1951. . Dr. Boyce did the first investl gations on this decay in Douglas fir when he was with the USDA division of forest pathology in Port land from 1920 to 1928. He became director of the Northeastern forest experiment station of the U. S Forest Service in 1928. Since 1929, he has been associated with Yale University. NOW OPEN Roseburg's Newest arid Finest .
