"Interest in religion on the part of college students is rising." said Dr. M. Willard Lampe, "It is a questioning interest a genuinely yearning interest. "It doesn't take the form of a mass movement. It is more on an individual basis. "Young people are searching for a philosophy of life that can give an inner peace and security against the outward confusion and turmoil of the times. The cynical point of view, as compared to a genera tion ago, has declined both among students and professors." Few educators in America are In a better position to assess the re ligious interest of college youth than Dr. Lampe, 68-year-old di rector of Iowa University's famous school of religion. Twenty-five years ago, Dr. I.ampe, a Presbyterian minister, conceived the idea that even in a lax-supported state university religion should be taught "not in directly or surreptitiously, but un apologctically, comprehensively, and in line with the best education al practice." Helped by a $35,000 Rockefeller grant, Dr. Lampe worked for sev eral years to get churches of dif ferent denominations to provide faculty members for his new school and underwrite their salaries. His idea was that in addition to stock courses in the history of compara tive religions students at state col leges should be able to study the specific faith of their choice. Today the school has a seven- Home Mortgage Increase Act Inked By Truman WASHINGTON W - President Truman Monday signed an act opening the way for the govern ment to boost its operations in fin ancing home mortgages. The new law puts up $1,395,000- 000 for the purchase of federally guaranteed Home mortgages. It also provides additional mortgage insurance under the Federal Hous ing Administration and veterans housing programs. The program includes an addi tional 900 million dollars of pur chasing power for the Federal Na tional Mortgage Association, a government owned corpora tion which buys mortgages from lending institutions and thus estab lishes a secondary mortgage mar ket for private home builders. The association popularly known as "Fannie May" because of its initials-has now been given $3,650,000,000 of purchasing author ity since it was set up. The act also gives the FHS an additional 400 million dollars of home insurance authorization, an additional 50 million dollars for housing in critical defense a"-eas, 40 million for community facilities and service and five million for housing loans in Alaska. Under the new law savings and loan associations will be permitted to purchase mortgages on property more than 50 miles from their of fices. Hart Mountain Deer Season Plan Protested LAKEVIEW Wl The Order of Antelope is protesting against a proposed deer-hunting season for archers in the Hart Mountain area. The State Game Commission last weekend tentatively scheduled the deer season there for the bow-and-arrow hunters. The Order of Antelope said wild life in the Hart Mountain refuge area should be protected from hunters, adding that there is plen ty of feed available for the deer and antelope and therefore no rea son why hunting should be allowed. "Many of our students go on to become clergymen themselves," said Dr. Lampe. "but that is not our primary goal." "There is a real Interest on the part of students in finding out about the faiths of others as well as their own. Often they are less interested in orthodox forms of religion, how ever, than they are In finding the meaning of life in satisfying ways." But to Dr. Lampe this eager student quest for a basic meaning to existence is a sure sign of the religious instinct. Since he quietly instituted the "Iowa Plan" other tax-supported I educational institutions across the j country have adopted it as a pat tern for their religious schools. He likes to feel that it has been a formula that has encouraged re ligious tolerance. "One of our former students has written a textbook on religion which he hopes will be acceptable to Jews, Protestants and Catho lics," Dr. Lampe said. "We are living in a world where an idea like this, even when well started, will not perpetuate itself automatically," he added in dis cussing his school's first quarter century. "It will always have to fight its way against prejudice, against misunderstanding, against cynicism and indifference, even against a false sense of security on the part of its friends."
