That's the major question facing this turbulent Repub lican national convention as the balloting rapidly approaches. Shadows of the 1912 convention, when Teddy Roosevelt bolted to form the Bull Moose party thus permitting- the Democrats to regain nower, hang heavy over Convention Hall. Underdog candidates like form er Minnesota governor Harold E. Stassen and California's Gov. Earl Warren are pinning their hopes on the possibility of a Taft-Eisenhow-er deadlock following the bitter delegate fights. On the other hand, top GOP hands like Joe Martin and former President Herbert Hoover have not hesitated publicly to express their concern over the wide-open scrap for contested del egations between the Ohio sen ator and the general. Powerful peace maneuvers to stop the possible splinter 'action were undertaken only one hour after permanent chairman Joe Martin arrived here last Friday. The Massachusetts congressman minced no words in his warning of dire results to the Taft-Eisenhow-er camps should they fail to reach a compromise. Previously, no permit was re quired. The permits, which cost nothing, may be secured at the Sanitary District office at the Landls Iron Works, Pacific Highway North. After the permit has been secured, the home owner may hook his pri vate line onto the District line. He may lay the pipe before ob taining the permit. Before covering up his work, he must secure the approval of an inspector. The Inspector can be notified through the District office and will come on about a day's notice. The action Is a safety precau tion against inflltralion, said Sul livan. The board wants to makt sure that all hookups meet speci- ficalions, for the protection of the nome-owner. Transfer Given Navy Recruiter A veteran of 12 years in the Navy most of it on submarines will replace Chief Petty Officer A. L. DeMott as Roseburg Navy recruiter.
