V ) 'it '' .! y THREE ROSEBURG RESIDENTS were honored, when Ore gon's Grand Chapter, Order of 'the Eastern Star, was in ses sion June 8-11 at the Masonic Temple in Portland. Mrs. The session began with Informal opening and memorial service Sun day evening, presided over by Al ice R. Eobinson, Worthy Grand, Matron and Leon B. Bakctel, Worthy Grand Patron. Monday and Tuesday meetinss were filled with business sessions, committee reports, addenda. The Session was climaxed by the Installation of of ficers for the ensuing year Wednes day evening, June 11 at which time Mrs. Wimberly, a Past Ma tron of Koseburg Chapter ,No. S was installed as Worthy Grand Matron. This event climaxes years of service Mrs. Wimberly ha i ren dered the Order of the Eastern.! Star which includes a term as Grand Representative from Ore gon to the District of Columbia, fifteen years a member of the Jurisprudence- Committee of the Grand Chapter, and election to the office of Associate Grand Conduct ress in June 1949 which led to the present office this year of Worthy Grand Matron. Mrs. Wimberly Is the wife of Judge Carl E. Wimberly, Rose burg. They have a daughter Fran ces Louise, (Mrs. Robert Healy), Weslwood Village,- Los Angeles, ,who flew to Portland to be wit'i f her mother during Grand Chap ter; a son, Carl E. Favett" Thompson I nd Mr;. Oni McC-.rd. J!i. Thompsen reported on the iUle conven'ii..!. and a son, Leland K., Roseburs. Mr. Wimberly, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Carl E. Wimberly, Jr., and chil dren Lee and Carolyn, and Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Wimberly motored to Portland to be present at the Installation. This made her family complete with the exception of the children of Mrs. Healy an! the Lee Wimberlys who were unable to ue present because ol illness. The Shrine Auditorium in the Masonic Temple was beautifully decorated to represent the "Hills of Home." This tremendous task was performed in a very short time by a well organized group of Portland and Vicinity's Associate Matrons and Patrons who had spent many hours in advance prep, aration so everything would be ready to be placed when the room was available. The East was a breathtaking scene; a huge oil painting covered the backdrop a scene of Mrs. Wimbe.-ly'g home nestled in Southern Oregon's wood ed hills, "The Hills of. Home." Livo trees-Douglas fir, pine, oedar, homlocIT and noble fir ranging In height from two feet to twelve feet, were placed in a natural fash ion surrounding the painting. Assisting Mrs. Hetrick with the installation ceremony was Mrs. Leroy Inman. Present were Mrs. I. J. Bean, new lion tamer; Mrs. Buckley Bell, Mrs. Edell Bryant, new presi ient; Mrs. Conrad Clune, Mrs. Glen f , , ,"r?r - - a1 V Carl E. Wimberly Sr., above left, was installed Worthy Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of Oregon; Mrs. George Churchill, was installed Grand Chaplain, and right, R. Cloyd Riffe, member of Josephine Chapter No. 26, and now a white lattice fencing covered with red roses and greenery filled in the spaces between the small trees. Ail the trees had stands of cross cut blocks from small trees with the bark exposed. They were cut on the Umpqua National Forest by George Churchill, Worthy Patron, John Robertson, Associate Patron, and Ray Hampton, Jr. Past Patron. They drove to Diamond Lake to cut the noble fir which -stow only in higher elevations. Other trees were cut in the North Umpqila district near Glide. About 75 trees were used. They were sprayed to make them fire resistant to con form with the Fire Marshal's code In Portland. A woodsy niche was placed b?low the platform in the East. It was centered with a water fountain surrounded by fern, moss, lichen and moss covered rocks. Amber spotlights highlight ed the scene. The red rose theme was artistically carried out with baskets of roses and trellises plac ed on the back of each Star Point chair, which were covered with vining red roses. Immediately after Mrs, Wimber ly was installed to her high of fice, Mr. Riffe sang "Prayer Per fect" a capello. Other elective of ficers were installed, followed by the appointive officers. Mr. Riffe, past Patron of Josephine Chapter No. 26, Grants Pass, was Installed Grand Organist. Mr. Riffe has dir ected the Roseburg Star Choral Club since its organization three years ago. The Choral group sang three numbers, "Love Sends a Lit tle Gift of Roses," dedicated to Mrs. Wimberly, during which her two small grancfchildren, Lee and Carolyn, walked the whole length of the auditorium carrying between them a big basket of red roses which they took, to their happy grandmother in the East. The group sang "Prelude from the Cycle of Life," dedicated to Elton Schroeder, Worthy Grand Patron. Mr. Schroeder is from Elgin Chapter No. 24, Myrtle Point. Songs were concluded by singing "A Fancy Children of the Moon," an invitation to all to come to Rose burg July 19 to attend the recep tion to be held then in honor of Mrs. Wimberly. Mr. Riffe directed the singing group, accompanied by Lois Ann Stewart. The members were dressed in their new coral dresses. They were: Mattie Lee Taylor, Frances Gcrretsen. Gladys Wiley, Ramona Hampton, Frances Ellison, Dora Ritzman, Hallie Woodward, Harriet Turner, Bea trice Churchill, Florence Plum mer and Margaret Austin. At the close of the installation several addentlas were presented which included the Newport As sembly of the Rainbow Girls, a group of Honored Queens from Portland and Vicinity. Then 23 girls from Roseburg Bethel No. 8, Order of Job's Daughters put on an attractive drill for the great audience. The girls, accompanied by several mothers motored to Portland for the event Wednesday, staying at the YWCA. They return ed the next day. Mrs. A. J. Ellison, Guardian of the Bethel, was in charge of the drill. The next addendum was present ed by Roseburg Chapter's Court esy Girls. It was proceeded by a song, "Only a Rose," sung by Thomas McNeill, member of Rose burg Chapter, now living in Port land. Mr. McNeill's high tenor voice thrilled his listeners, when he sang for the new Worthy Grand Matron. He was accompanied by Mrs. Stewart. Seventeen girls and three officers took part in the "Hap piness Trees" addendum. Sixteen girls dressed in while dotted Swiss formals, girdled with niic green sashes to which were attached red rosebuds, marched under a white arch, through a garden gate which was opened and closed by Virginia Hicks, Ramona Hampton, Con ductress, Grace Robertson, Asso ciate Matron, and Beatrice Church ill, Worthy Matron. The arch was covered with green vines and red LESLIE CHPMANS HAVE FATHER'S DAY FETE Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Chapman graciously entertained at a family party at their beautiful new home in South Yoncalla, Sunday honor, ing the fathers of both Mr. and Mrs. Chapman. A delicious picnic dinner was enjoyed on the patio, after which music and visiting were enjoyed by the following: V. M. ROTARY ANNS TO MEET AT DINNER THIS EVENING Rotary Anns will meet at a sev en o'clock dinner tonight at Carl's Haven. This will be the last meet ing until fall. Wives of all Rotar ians are invited. Installation of the new officers will take place. An interesting pro gram has been arranged for the occasion. While Mrs. Robertson and Mrs. Churchill went to the East to bring Mrs. Wimberly and Mrs. Schroed. er to the center of the floor where the arch was situated, Mr. Mc Neill sang, "For You." A swing mysteriously appeared under the arch and the two were seated in the swing and swung rhythmically while the girls , completed their drill. The lights were dimmed and the sixteen little trees suddenly be came lighted, the red rosebuds glowing in the darKness. wrs. Wimberly was presented an arm bouquet of red roses and a gift from the Chapter. A gift and a boutonniere from the chapter were presented to Mr. Schroeder by Mrs. Robcrfson. They were return ed to the East and the Courtesy girls completed their degree by marching out with their lighted trees. The addendum was planned and directed by Mary Marshall, Past Matron, who Is to be com plimented on . her presentation of an outstanding degree. More than one hundred mem bers of Roseburg Chapter and friends drove to' Portland to oe present at the Installation. Rose burg Chapter was allowed a re served section of 81 seats, In ad dition to reserved sections for the Choral Club and the Courtesy Girls. Following a clever degree of an Elgin clock presented by Mr. Schroeder's Chapter, Elgin No. 24, the Southern Oregon Association put on a folk dance. Participants were appropriately dressed in their colorful costumes and added much to the evening. Roseburg members taking part were Bruce and Olive Elliott and Viola Spencer. Mrs. Earl Wiley was chairman of the committee planning this degree from different chapters in South ern Oregon, The evening was climaxed by an intricate drill, expertly executed by members of the Associate Ma trons and Patrons of Portland and vicinity. There were 80 taking part. The ladies were dressed in lovely fuschla red dresses; the men in dark trousers and white formal coats. The precision of their drill was excellent and a thrilling spec tacle to watch. The evening's events were close J by the Grand Officers forming a large semicircle In the East and "A Benediction" was sung by a F. S. CLUB TO MEET ON TUESDAY The F. S. Club will meet Tues day afternoon, June 24, at the home of Miss Marie Martens, 1032 N. Jackson Street. All members are most cordially invited to at tend. LUTHERAN LAYMEN'S LEAGUE HAS INTERESTING MEETING SUNDAY NIGHT The regular meeting of the Luth eran Laymen's League was held Sunday evening at St. Paul's Luth eran Church. Following (he business session, an informal talk was given by H. Vansteenburg on the highlights of the District Synod Convention held recently in Portland, to which he was a lay delegate. The topic study, which was to have been led by Walter Nehring, was dropped due to the interest shown in the report by Mr. Van steenburg. This topic will be held at a later date. Refreshments were served later in the evening bv Mr. and Mrs, Carly Bennett and' Mrs. Carl Hinth er. Returning Home Mrs. John Gardner and two children are re turning to their home in Roseburg this week, following a trip to Glen dale. " Mr. Fred Waugh, Morman minister, per formed the ceremony June 15. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Slayton of Sutherlin, and the bridegroom Is the son of C. Faulke and Mrs. R. Mason of Vancouver, Wash., and Spokane, Wash., respectively. Miss Betty Klllin'gsworth of Suth erlin, friend of the couple, was maid of honor. Gordon Crase of Roseburg, friend of the couple, was best man. Ushers were G. B. Shurts, grandfather of the bride from Shoshone, Ma., and Kavo Btirnes. friend of (he couple, from Sutherlin. The majority degree was given Mrs. Evelyn Cornish Wahl, and Mrs. Ila Cornish Gourley. They were presented with a small Book of Job by the Honored Queen, Betty Jones. Honored Queen Betty was pre sented the gavel for her reign by her father, and the white Bible from the Guardian Council was given to her by Meryl Wahl. Tho Past Honored Queen, Harriet Riggs, presented Queen Betty with the Queen s jewel. All graduates of Sutherlin anil Oakland grade and high school were presented handkerchief cor. sages by Harriet Riggs. A poem was read to them by Evelyn Wahl. Merit badges were award ed to the girls who had carnel them, by guardian, Irma Cornish. A drill presenting the past hon ored queen, Harriet, with her past queen jewel was comprised of Al ta Jean Campbell, Shirley Baker, Janice Parks, Margaret Rose, Car ol Firman and Betty Jones. The drill presenting the outgo ing guardian, Meryl Wahl. and as sociale guardian, Richard Riggs, with their gifts from the Bethel, was given by Harriet Riggs, Alta Jean Campbell, Betty Jane Jones, Shirley Baker, Susan Stearns, Bet te Babcock, Margaret Rose, Carol Firman and Janice Parks.
