Epilepsy is chronic nervous disease. There are periodic sei. ores of convulsions with disturb ances of consciousness. The aclu -u cause is believed to be an ab normality of nervous impulses within the cranial area. Buth sexes r.re equally liable to epilepsy. Tlie only apparent difference be tween epilepsy and accidental or occasional convulsions In children Is one of duration. The attacks arc similar: It is difficult at times to dislinRiiish between them; but in epilepsy the fits are repeated and the condition is chronic. Two kinds of epilepsy are to be noted: a severe form known as grand mal, with insensibility and spasms: and a milder form petit mal, with transient loss of con sciousness without spasms. In the severe form of epilepsy (grand mal) there are sometimes four stages in the attack. First, a preliminary "warning" or "aura" occurs in cases of most of those afflicted. It consists of a sense of unreality and dininess, of great fear, with various sen sations of taste, hearing, and sight. The aura, is rule, lasts only a few seconds, Scconrt, the person may turn around rapidly, or even run swift ly. More often a cry or low gurgl ing groan is emitted, and the vic tim falls to the ground unconsc ious. The had is usually thrown bark or to one side, the body Is stiff and arched upward or bent side wise. The arms are usually bent at the elbow and the fingers tightly Thousands At Arena For Opening Of Rodeo (Continued from Page One) panel truck representing Hometite Corp. wearing a tin hat and oper atlng a power saw bigger than himself. This Is the rigid stafce, and lasts only fifteen to thirty seconds. The third is the convulsive stage. The spasms begin; the limbs jerk violently; the f:ice is co-iloited and the eyes are wide open and rolling, the pupils dilated and the whites of the eyes showing. The individual may bite his tongue and froth al the mouh, often there is incontinence of the btad uer and bowels, there is a ahort period of unconciousness. In the leurth stage the person gradually l.ccomes relaxed and quiet and usually recovers after j a variable time, often suffering I from a dull headache. I The milder form or (petit mal) j there is momentary unconscious ; ness, but the individual does not have spasms. Often there is just a mere interruption in lu ac'iv ; ities. becoming suddenly pale, eyes fixed, and stops whatever he i.i doing, talking, eating, etc., only to continue in a few moments where he left off. There are many varieties of this milder kind of epilepsy, but it usually ends in the severer form, with fits. Fainting is most likely to be confused with the mild form of epilepsy, but in fainting the individual usually falls and the pulse is feeble or impercept ible, while in this variety of epi lepsy the person does not fall as a rule, and there is a history of similar attacks. The pulse is not usually affected in this mild form of epilepsy. (Paid Advertisement) Parish To Honor Father Edmund Parish organizations of St. Jo-.-eph'a Church will honor Rev.
