Boost fn Living Costs Will Hike Railway Wages
WASHINGTON The govern
ment'! latest cost of living bare
meter moved up Thursday under
pressure of rising food and rent
costs to within a tiny fraction of
the record high reached last Jan
uary. The living-cost index, measuring
prices of food, clothing, shelter and
a host of other things climbed
during the month ending May IS
two-tenths of one per cent to 18D
per cent of the 1935-39 average.
That is 4.1 per cent over the
mark of 18 months ago when price
and wage controls took effect, The
peak figure last January was 189.1.
A million and a Quarter rail-
workers will get an automatic two
cent hourly wage boost as a result
of the latest increase in living
costs. Their work contract ties
wages to the cost - of - living
index and adjustments are made
each three months.

James Fred Coff
Dies At 43
James Fred Goff, 43, 122 W. First
Avenue N., died on June 18, accord
ing to Long & Orr Mortuary.
He was born at Heaber Springs,
Ark. on May 24, 1909, and married
Maggie M. Watson 25 years ago at
Harrison, Ark. Goff resided in
Newberg for five years, later mov
ing to Myrtle Creek and then to
Roseburg
He was employed by the Youngs
Bay Lumber Co. since Oct. 10,
1949, and was a member of Local
2671, Lumber" and Sawmill Work
ers Union.
Goff is survived by his wife;
mother and father, Mr. and Mrs.
Ed Goff of Arkansas; nine chil
dren, Mildred Virginia Grow, Port
land; Grade May Riddle, Rose
burg; Winnie Belle Locklin, Shaw
nee, Okla., Peggy Lou, Betty Jo,
Freddy LeRoy, James Edward,
Polly Ann and Cornelius Lensey,
all of Roseburg, and three grand
children. Eight surviving brothers and sis
ters include Calvin, N. Little Rock,
Ark.; Arthur, of Michigan; Rich
ard, Kensett, Ark.; Edward, Oak
land, Calif.; N. D., US Army;
Marie, Philadelphia, Pa., and Nina
Clarence, US Army; Marie, Phil
adelphia, Pa., and Nina May

Leading the overall living cost
rise was a boost of four tenths of
one per cent In rent across the
country. The price of food at the
grocery store moved up three
tenths of one per cent.
Although prices on most items
have climbed Office of Price
Stabilization officials announced
Wednesday ceilings would be sus.
pended this week end on bottled
whiskey and wine. They have been
selling for months below ceiling
levels.
. The two-cent wage boost for the
nation's railroad workers goes Into
effect July 1. The same railworkers
three months ago lost a cent-an-hour
when the Bureau of "Labor
Statistics cost of - living index
dropped between January and
February. Since April, 1951, the
railworkers have accumulated a
toal cost . of living wage boost
of 12 cents an hour.

Wife Face Tax Liens
PORTLAND Wl Hugh Earle,
internal revenue collector, Tues
day filed tax liens totaling (276,128
against the proprietor of a former
downtown Portland cardroom.
Irving I. Hasson, former opera
tor of Pasha's Sports Center, owes
the government $161,412 in tax,
penalty and Interest for 1946,
Earle said. Another lien was filed
against Hasson and his wife, Eda,
for 1947 to 1950.
The cardroom was closed down
last year after Hasson was ar
rested on a bookmaking charge. .

Legion Protests Sale
Of Bonus List Names
PORTLAND l A list of Ore.
gon veterans about to receive a
state bonus, offered for sale to
merchants, was obtained from an
established mail list company.
That was the report Wednesday
of L. C. Swafford, an Army re
serve captain, whose offer of the
list for sale brought a protest from
the American Legion.
Swafford said he got the list
from the C. B. Rhoadcs Mail List
Company, which has been selling
various types of lists in Portland
for 40 year. The Rhoadcs com
pany got the names from county
courthouses, Swafford said.
Letters were mailed to merchants
offering the list for sale at 2
cents a name in units of 1,000. The
letters were signed by D. L. Swaf
ford, who is Swafford's wife.
Swafford, a mail clerk, is a
member of the Legion and was
active In promoting the bonus.
BIBLE CHAPTER MISSING
RICHMOND, Va. (1 The
Rev. G. Houston Patterson of
Blueficld, W. Va., found a chap
ter missing in the Bible much
to his embarrassment.
He was conducting the bacca
laureate service for the graduat
ing class of Union Theological
Seminary. Kor several minutes,
he thumbed the massive Bible in
the pulpit while the audience wait
ed and watched.
Finally, he said: "I will read
the 23rd Psalm."
A bit red-faced, he then added:
"I am reading this psalm today
for a very special reason. It is
one with which I hope you will
never be confronted. I find my
self with a Bible from which the
23rd chapter of St. Luke is unac
countably missing."
