Sft ROME on A new Fascist move ment, newly mated with Monarch ists, was proving the explosive surprise in returns Tuesday from elections in a third of Italy's pro vinces and towns but the govern ing Christian Democratic party held control of Rome's City Hall. The Italian Social Movement (MSI) which venerates the memory of Mussolini and idealizes flis rvirnnr.tA ntatf in league with wealthy Monarchists, won Salerno, where American soldiers fought a vicious World War II invasion bat tle to wipe out Fascism in Italy. The same bloc won Naples, the tri-nat- nnrt which is Allied head quarters for Southern Eruope, and Bari, where U. S. arms am pours into Italy. TiVioti ereat IT. S. Air Force base during the war, also joined the Fascist column. The MSI surged toward local power in many other places in poverty stricken, over populated Southern Italy, and appeared to be challenging the Communists for the nosition of second biggest party in the country. Against the Communist and pro Communist Bloc, Premier Alcide de Gasperi's Christian Democrats ot the center did a little better in the local contests in 2,400 towns, winning; a number of small com munities from the leftists. But the Communists still did well. The final results in the important big city election of Rome, gave the Christian Democrats 384,020 votes, against 314,243 for the left ists and 206,819 for. the Fascist Monarchists. Even in Rome, the government party slipped below its strength of the 1948 election. Then the de Gssperl forces marshalled 453.900 votes, ajainst the Leftists' 26S.0O0 and the ex treme right's 50,000. Market Owners Accused Of Tex Dodging SAN ' FRANCISCO ( Two Californisns,- owners of the Central Market and Del Monte Meat Co., of Portland, Ore., are to be tried this fall on charges of income atx evasion. . They are Daifte M. Tognoli, Fairfax, Calif., and Frank J. De Benedetti, San Rafael, Calif. Tognoli is accused of evading $130,941 in 1944-45 taxes and De Benedetti of evading $65,718 for the same year. ' Federal Judge Louise E. State Treasurer Walter J. Pear son was the absent member who was with his wife In Portland. The new deputy, who probably will be appointed Thursday, will succeed E. C; Halley, who retires July 1. The board was reported to ba split between two applicants. , The board awarded two con tracts for a $387,886 addition to the state Tuberculosis hospital in Salem, and for $312,300 for an em ployes dormitory at the same hos pital . . . Both are to Portland firms. Donald M. Drake Company got the contract for adding to the hospital, and E. E. Settergren was awarded the dormitory job. - The board also decided to call w4-. Msyia, UK -The News-KeTlew, Rtseburf, Ore. t for bids for remodeling the kitchen at Oregon Fairview Home for Feeble-Mindel Persons. It will cost $125,000. Portland Has Inner Foresr Fire Lookout PORTLAND Wl - Portland now has an lnside-the-city forest fire lookout system. Three lookout points were set up Monday to keep watch on 3,000 acres of city-owned forest which runs along a ridge in the north west section of the city. Several hundred acres were blackened and a number of homes threatened in a fire in the area Inst summer.
