Mart OS "Tiller Carnival Scheduled June 7 Blue jeans, bandanas and beards will be the order of the day on Saturday, June 7, when the annual Tiller-Drew school carnival will be held. It is a school benefit affair. Includod in the Paul Bunyan day celebration will be games, concessions and good eating. Square dancing and movies are on the evening program. Nail driving contests, a tug-of-war be tween loggers, a three-legged race, pie-eating contest, hog and hus band calling exhibition, side shows and a Paul Bunyan shave exhi bition are other events of the day. Mrs. Emmit Belcher and Mrs. Larry Byrd, who are in charge of the school cafeteria, will handle the dinner arrangements. In the old days Tiller was noted for elaborate two-day celebrations. About 35 years ago folks used to walk 20 miles from their cabin sites, set back In the hills of the rugged South Umpqua River d' trict, to attend the affairs, old timers say. Rodeo shows used to be held where the Tiller Ranger Station is now located. Entire families would set up overnight camp spots along the river near the post office to take part in festivities.
