Valley from a two week's trip to
visit relatives in Southern Texas
and Arkansas. Tbey made the trip

MEMPHIS (XI Howls and
shrieks from hounds, humans and
raccoons echoed over Lake Miguel
and brought the Memphis Humane
Society up in arms .
The uproar Sunday came from a
"coon-on-a-log" contest a contro
versial sport which the socitty
versial sport which the society
calls vicious and inhumane.
George R. Bates, society presi
dent, said he would seek a court
injunction to prevent any similar
competitions in the future.
The contest was for the "south
ern chanplonshlp." Forty hounds
were entered. About 500 spectators
attended.
It works like this:
The coon, with a handler nearby
holding a tether, is placed on a
log floating about 50 feet from the
bank.
The eager hound is sent to drag
him off.
